4 Dragon Ball games that tell the story better than the anime

If there's one game that favors completeness, this is it Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3. Its story mode recreates battles from around the world Dragon Ball timelines, incl FROM, GTand even movie scripts. While it doesn't deal much with dialogue, it makes up for it by covering an enormous amount of combat, ensuring that very little of the core story is skipped over. It even has content from the original Dragon Ball series, with Arale making a guest appearance.

The return of what-if scenarios also allows players to explore alternative outcomes, something anime only explores in the movies, and barely. By focusing on scope and player agency, it delivers a version of the story that feels expansive and interactive, even if it sacrifices some cinematic details.

Dragon Ball Z: Sparking Zero is often thought of as “Tenkaichi 4” and for people who like to collect characters, it certainly is. With that said, it pales in comparison Tenkaichi 3at least when it comes to retelling the original DBZ story.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

The best way to relieve Dragon Ball

At first sight Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot it looks like the definitive adaptation, and in many ways it is. The base game follows the story from when Raditz arrives to the defeat of Kid Buu, presenting it as an action RPG with open areas, side quests, and extensive lore entries. It excels in how it adds context to the world and allows players to explore locations and interact with characters outside of the main story battles.

Kakarot is primarily a single-player game.

However, it also cuts certain minor moments from the anime and instead focuses on the most important story beats like Trunk's past. The result is a cleaner, more streamlined version of the narrative that strips away the filler while maintaining the underlying emotional arcs.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot it also has tons of DLC covering a bunch of other arcs, including the 23rd World Tournament, the Super Saga, and even Dragon Ball Daima. There really is no better way to dive back in Dragon Ball than with Kakarot.

Best original plot

While Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 does not retell the original story in the traditional sense, it deserves mention for how it recontextualizes it. Instead of replaying events as they happened, players become part of a time patrol that corrects warps across the timeline.

This allows iconic moments (like Goku's transformation in Ultra Instinct) to play with new twists, giving them a sense of unpredictability that the anime never had. The game also expands on obscure lore and introduces original characters, making the story feel more like an extension than a retread. For longtime fans, this approach may be more engaging than simply repeating the same scenes.

All this is without mentioning that the main character Xenoverse 2 is a player-created character, the main selling point for many people. On a return visit DBZ the story over and over again may be stale for some, Xenoverse 2 dives into it with an interesting time travel twist. There are even versus modes where your own character goes up against others Xenoverse players.
