Oshi no Ko emerged as one of the most impressive drama/romance anime, a masterful anime that juggles many related genres at once. Depending on the episode Oshi no Ko is either a dark idol music anime, a dramatic romance anime with a bit of humor, a heartbreaking revenge story, or an exploration of what life really means. It's a small miracle Oshi no Ko is one of the best anime of winter 2026 as it airs its 3rd season.
It won't beat just any anime Oshi no Kobut some certainly can, often by doing what Oshi no Ko yes, only better. Oshi no Ko it does a good job of balancing many genres and concepts, but some anime are stronger dramas or better romances, and some anime feel completely different than Oshi no Ko but they are clearly better, if only slightly.
Vinland Saga is a more inspiring example of hitting rock bottom
Thorfinn is sure to make something of himself after this
The Vinland Saga stands proudly as one of the best anime, whether fans consider the best historical series, the best seinen anime, the best action anime, or even the best drama anime. Oshi no Ko it does some great things The Vinland Saga no, like deconstructing the idol industry and giving people a second chance at life, but The Vinland Saga it does even more. The Viking Age setting is stylish and cool, but it's just a backdrop for what The Vinland Saga it really does.
This excellent historical anime is more of the same Oshi no Ko than first impressions might suggest. Both challenge their heroes to move on after heartbreaking losses, but Thorfinn Karlsefni does a better job than Aqua Hoshino. Aqua's quest is great but not inspiring, while Thorfinn's own rough adventures have shown him the light at the end of a pretty bloody tunnel. Thorfinn lost everything, including hope, but still overcame his inner demons to dream of a better realm. That's what his late father and even his mentor/nemesis Askeladd would have wanted of him, even if neither man lived to see it.
Kaguya-Sama: Love is War is the best romance anime of all time
True love, drama and comedy are perfectly mixed in this anime
Oshi no Ko delivers the goods with stories of young love and self-discovery Kaguya-Sama: Love is War makes it even better. Sometimes it feels like a strength Oshi no Ko mixing so many genres in one package, but it also tends to spread the anime quite thin. On the other hand, it gives likes Kaguya-sama be even stronger because they go deeper with fewer ideas. Kaguya-sama is simply unbeatable in the field of high school romance for several reasons.
7 Oshi no Ko Characters Who Deserved Better Endings
Oshi no Ko robbed these characters of better endings.
First, this charming high school romance anime has a great narrator who holds things together, acting as a referee and commentator with both insight and comedy. what's more Kaguya-sama features some of the smartest and most polished set pieces and dialogue in anime with the love battles between Kaguya and Miyuki, not to mention the arcs of self-discovery and growth that Oshi no Ko cannot answer. Kaguya-sama he teaches the characters to love and understand themselves and each other, with stellar results.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is about the hope that follows loss
Frieren followed a different path than Aqua Hoshino
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is an emotional megahit for the same reasons as Oshi no Ko and The Vinland Saga. All three of these excellent anime challenge their heroes with the tough question, “Now what?” after a great loss. Dealing with grief and putting your life back together after trauma isn't easy, but Aqua, the elf Frieren, and Thorfinn all have to try. Among all these anime, Frieren he handles it with the gentlest hand, which may have contributed to its popularity.

Oshi no Ko and The Vinland Saga are rather dark, while Frieren is tonally more balanced, with happy adventures wrapped in great sadness. It also helps how Frieren offers a much-needed Tolkien-esque look at how long elves live, all in a gorgeous Dungeons & Dragons-A fantasy style realm of dragons, demons and fangs masquerading as treasure chests. It's colorful, fun, and most of all, emotionally sensitive in one amazing sword and sorcery package.
Dr. Stone expresses Shonen values with the power of science
Dr. Stone also asks tough questions about civilization and the abuse of power
Dr. Stone is definitely trying to do something other than Oshi no Kowith the former focusing on the power of science, while the latter is built on scathing deconstructions of the entertainment genre. It seems almost apples to oranges to me, but if anime fans dig deep enough they will see how Dr. Stone and Oshi no Ko understand in broad strokes.
Oshi no Ko: 8 Characters to Shine in Season 3
Oshi no Ko Season 3 enters a new story arc that will make these characters shine their brightest!
Both anime throw the protagonist into a new life that they never expected or asked for, with Dr. Amamiya was reborn as Aqua Hoshino, while scientist Senku Ishigami woke up 3700 years later in the new Stone Age. Neither hero can return to their original lives, but they can make the most of what's going on now, and Senku has a serious edge over Aqua. Unlike the vindictive liar Aqua, Senku is an inspiring oddball with the ability to prove the power of both friendship and science. Senku discards violence and domination in favor of building, or rather rebuilding things to promote peace. all the time Dr. Stone captivates fans with the mystery of Why-Man and educates viewers with the hard sciences.
The man with the chainsaw depicts a long struggle for happiness
Denji usually means well, but is rarely rewarded for it
A man with a chainsaw is a dark shonen anime with some powerful characters who can never seem to find happiness even though they don't ask for much. This may sound familiar Oshi no Ko fans, with both anime featuring flawed humans trying to navigate a confusing, often painful world where good things don't come easily. Denji makes this narrative even more compelling as a twisted anti-hero who eats small and still he can't get what he asks for.
Both Aqua and Denji have supernatural elements to them, but overall Denji is more likable and pitiful, which helps A man with a chainsaw stronger of the two anime. Denji has so little, yet he could lose everything, making him and the audience wonder why humble people like them can't seem to get ahead. In addition A man with a chainsaw presents Maki as one of the best villains in the business, a person who feels like a nurturing mother when inside she's actually a total monster. A man with a chainsaw and Oshi no Ko are both darkly subversive but A man with a chainsaw it does better.
