6 Attack on Titan Characters who deserved better endings

Attack on Titan it is also known to have a beautiful but extremely cruel world where characters are often burdened by their fate. However, as the series nears its climax, not all of the most iconic arcs have received the ending they deserve. Instead of poetic closure, we were left with queens on the benches and unexpected off-screen exits that left fans wanting more.

While the conclusion was spectacular, it failed in some areas and left a lot to be desired by fans. Here are some of the characters that were either sidelined, rushed or became footnotes after seasons of incredible growth.

Floch Forster

Floch and the Yaegerists in Attack on Titan

Love him or hate him, Floch was the only one who said exactly what would happen if Eren was prevented from continuing his mission. He devoted every second of his life to the survival of his people and may have died a villain to many, yet he fought for a cause he sincerely believed was the only means to save his home. During the series, Floch was the character with the second best character development next to Eren himself.

He was a true hero to his own people, his journey from a frightened recruit who wanted to disobey orders to a cold, determined leader who clung to his ideals until his last breath. Where others hesitated and hesitated to take sides, Floch never wavered, and his desperate, lonely death at the hands of Mikasa was bittersweet for a man who had been right all along in the cycle of hatred.

Ymir (Scout)

Ymir

Ymir's death is one of the show's biggest what-ifs, as it was literally removed via off-screen flashback narration. She rescued Reiner and Bertholdt and was brought to Marley where she was absorbed to transfer to the Jaw Titan. It was a huge waste of a person with many years left to live and no motivation to die on behalf of a nation that had treated her cruelly all her life.

Marley could even turn her into a killing weapon, but she could have stayed in Paradiso and kept History safe, but died on behalf of a nation she owed nothing to. Her departure was a convenient means of changing the action rather than a conclusion that could be attributed to her fiercely independent nature and her love of History.

Erwin Smith

Erwin Smith in Attack on Titan (2)

The irony of Erwin Smith's story is that he died steps away from the cellar, a truth he had been desperately trying to obtain all his life. He died just before the secrets of the world were understood after dragging hundreds of men to their deaths and surrendering his own humanity to the truth. The narrator's greatest sorrow is to die in the dirt, where the answer to his life's question was only a few journeys away.

Although his last command was legendary, his fans remain in awe of what a man of such genius could do with the knowledge of the outside world. He should have seen the sea and the basement with his own eyes, and not be the ghost who then made the scouts make all the hard decisions.

Hang Zoe

Hange was the heart and brains of the Scouts after Erwin's death, but her sacrifice during the finale seemed forced by the story. She went out in a blaze of glory and fought the Colossal Titans, and many fans believed that the scene was only set up to force Armin into the position of commander. The danger that Hange was holding didn't seem completely insurmountable at that moment.

For a character who defied all impossible odds and thrived on science and curiosity, a simple suicide accusation seemed like a poor way out. The Hange should have been able to see the world outside of the war as they were one of the few who cared about the biology and wonders of the Titans rather than killing.

Ymir Fritz (Founder)

Ymir Fritz in Attack on Titan (2)

One of the most controversial aspects of the entire finale was the revelation of the fact that Ymir was still a slave in the Paths because she loved King Fritz, even though he never treated her like a human. After millennia of suffering and her children eating her own flesh, her motivation boiled down to a forced toxic attachment due to her Stockholm syndrome, seemed like a shallow explanation for such a cosmic tragedy.

She needed to get a resolution that emphasized regaining her agency and humanity, other than waiting for Mikasa to reveal how to “let go”. Her story was one of passive suffering until the very end, and as a being who is as powerful as a god, many fans believe they never really saw the true nature of her being.

I may be the enemy of mankind, but I am your friend, Eren. I can't be a good girl and I don't want to be a god. But when I see someone cry and say that no one needs them, I want to tell them that's not true. — Historia Reiss

Historia Reiss

The anime finale was fantastic, but left a lot to be desired when it came to Historia Reiss, who was shown to be practically non-existent in the series finale. She was no longer queen, nor was anything related to her pregnancy, husband or child ever revealed. What was the point of her baby? Because it was given so much importance that she was completely ignored, she ended up being a background character with no words and confusing pregnancy subplots.

HISTORY SELECTED

Attack on Titan: Why Historia is one of the most underrated characters in the series

Attack on Titan built up Historia's character beautifully, but left her irrelevant by the end of the series, leaving many questions unanswered.

Historia was a character based on the essence of living for herself, but she finished the series as a political puppet who had no say in the final conflict or any role. For a woman who rebelled against her father and a literal wall god, a quiet footnote in the show's most important hour was a huge disservice to her entire journey.
