71 percent of PC gamers will never use Nvidia DLSS 5, survey shows

Nvidia's DLSS 5 reveal last month was met with memes and anger. While most of the internet was DLSSifying the images as jokes, others talked about how “generating photorealistic lighting and AI-powered materials” looked like a mere AI filter and would destroy unique art styles. It is evident that many players did not like it.

Of course, it's hard to quantify sentiment through memes and tweets, so PC Gamer decided to poll its readers to understand where they stand when it comes to using DLSS5. Rather than just a “yes or no” poll, this one included options for what good or bad players think it looks like, too.

Confirmation of what we already knew

Could Nvidia convince you to use DLSS 5?” asked the poll with the following options and results:

As good as it looked, I am ethically opposed to it and would never allow it

37%

It looks terrible, I would never use it

34%

I'm already convinced

10%

If only it looked better

10%

I would use it for certain games

9%

From a total of 4,484 votes, it's evident that most people don't care how good it looks, it's unethical and would never use it. Beyond that, players thought it looked terrible and wouldn't use it. That's a whopping 71 percent who say they won't use Nvidia DLSS 5 regardless of how the games look.

Only ten percent of players are completely convinced that they will turn it on if the game has the option. On the fringes, another ten percent think it's a great idea, but would only use it if it looked better than the storefront. And finally, only nine percent said they would use it in certain games. My guess is that it would probably include games that don't have great visuals themselves.

Nvidia confirms that DLSS 5 embeds an AI-generated image through games

GeForce evangelist Jacob Freeman explained that DLSS 5 isn't baked into the game, instead looking at individual frames and studying the flat image.

It's clear that most gamers don't care what DLSS 5 has to offer, whether it's based on principle or just how the games look. Maybe Nvidia could convince more people if the showcase didn't look like a glorified AI glam filter.
