Monkey D. Luffy is the protagonist of the film One piece series. Throughout the story's long run, Luffy was able to come out on top in most of his fights. Sometimes, however, he was clearly outmatched and very close to death. While rare, some One piece the characters almost manage to kill Luffy, but with a bit of luck he manages to avoid the worst case scenario, either through the plot or the intervention of another character.

Charlotte Katakuri

Charlotte Katakuri he is definitely one of the most popular One Piece antagonists. Katakuri was the main obstacle for the Straw Pirates throughout the island arc as the strongest of the sweet Big Mom Pirate Commanders. To allow his crew to continue and sail away, Luffy entered the Mirror World and took on Katakuri in battle.
However, it was immediately apparent that compared to Katakuri, Luffy was outmatched, at least at first. You can definitely say that Katakuri had quite a few opportunities to kill Luffy. During this confrontation, Luffy had to kidnap Brulee in order to escape and gain some energy. If Luffy couldn't do it, Katakuri would surely kill him. Not only that, but at the end of their battle, Katakuri could have fought more but decided to give up and let Luffy go out of his newfound respect for the Straw Hat captain.

Mr. Crocodile

Mr. Crocodile he was one of the first main antagonists of the One Piece series, acting as the main villain of the Arabasta Saga. Luffy and Crocodile have battled on numerous occasions during the Arabasta arc, three times to be exact. Until the final fight, Crocodile had a chance to kill Luffy.
In fact, Luffy survived the first time only thanks to Nico Robin's intervention. Even at the end of their third fight, Luffy had to use his wits and use his blood to fight to defeat the Crocodile. In the pre-time skip, fighting Logia was definitely not an easy task, as Crocodile proved.

Rob Lucci

Rob Lucci was a powerful foe that Luffy faced when the Straw Hat Pirates set out on their journey to rescue Nico Robin during the Enies Lobby Arc. Rob Lucci was one of the CP9s and also had Zoan Neko Neko no Mi powers, Model: Leopard.
Luffy definitely fought with his Six Powers to take down Lucci. In fact, without Usopp's speech that allowed Luffy to get up and continue fighting, Luffy would have lost and died at that point.

Buggy

Buggy is a character that One Piece fans will meet very early in the story. He was quite a weak and clumsy character back then. Usually people like Luffy could easily defeat him as shown in the Orange Town arc.
However, when Buggy returned to Logue Town, he was able to capture Luffy. On the same execution stand where Gol D. Roger died, Buggy nearly ended Luffy's pirate career. In fact, Luffy would have died for good if his father, Monkey D. Dragon, had not struck with lightning and saved his life. Luffy got extremely lucky and almost missed it.

Big Mom

Big Mom was one of the four emperors in the One Piece series. She was first seen in the Fishman Island arc, but later became a major looming threat in the Whole Cake Island arc.
Luffy was already pretty strong by the time of the WCI arc, he had access to powers like Gear 4, but even that wouldn't be enough to defeat Big Mom. In fact, Luffy and Big Mom clashed for a moment, but he was very easily sent flying back. Luffy and the Straw Hats had only one option on Whole Cake Island, and that was to run away from Big Mom to survive.
Even at the end, after Luffy fought Katakuri, they were only able to escape thanks to the sacrifice of the Fishman Pirates and Germa 66.

Kaido

Another Sea Emperor, Kaidowas a powerful character that could end Luffy's life. In Wano, Kaido set himself up as the main antagonist and Luffy had to overcome him. At the beginning of Wano, Luffy was overconfident and decided to attack Kaido head-on. Kaido defeated Luffy in one fell swoop. At that point, Kaido could have easily killed Luffy, but instead chose to send him to prison to break his spirit.
Kaido technically killed Luffy in this arc later on as well. During their Onigashima confrontation, Kaido killed Luffy on the roof after being hit by CP0. However, Luffy's heart started beating again thanks to his Awakening Gear 5. Under any other circumstances, Luffy would have lost and died here. It was only after he underwent Awakening that Luffy was finally able to defeat him.

Blackbeard

Blackbeard he is set to become Luffy's greatest rival and enemy One piece. Blackbeard and Luffy have a deep history as the former is the main reason Ace died.
Even before obtaining the Gura Gura no Mi, Blackbeard was the main threat and a character capable of killing Luffy. At Impel Down, Blackbeard and Luffy battled, and if not for Jinbe's intervention and incapacitation of both, Blackbeard could have taken Luffy's life right there. Even now, if Luffy and Blackbeard were to face each other again, it's possible that Blackbeard would come out on top and take Luffy's life.

Magellan he was a major threat in the Impel Down arc as the warden of the prison. If there was one character Luffy and the others needed to avoid, it was definitely him. Magellan has the poison Devil Fruit, Doku Doku no Mi, and anyone who comes into contact with its poison is most certainly doomed.
Luffy was badly poisoned by Magellan and was only able to survive thanks to Bon Clay's miracle and Ivanko's Hora Hora no Mi. Luffy was extremely lucky and had to shave years off his life to be able to survive Magellan's poison.
