Summary
-
The Korean fraction in the expansion of the conquerors for the Age of Empires 2 was added on the basis of the success of StarCraft in Korea.
-
Microsoft insistence on the Korean fraction caused historical inaccuracies and even a little political tension.

I still don't understand logic.
It is quite unbelievable how well Empires 2 believes, thanks to its definitive release. At the first start, there is no doubt about the popularity of RTS, but there was a long time in the genre for a very long time. The remaster, even though it is not icing, did a great job to maintain the relevant title of the elder.

Age of Empires Mobile is much better than I thought it would be
I'm always llittle skeptical about mobile games, but Age of Empires on your tablet looks quite great.
During the reign of the original game, the expansion of the conquerors introduced several new factions. However, one particular fraction seems to have been presented for a somewhat stupid reason. Sandy Petersen, who was the designer of the original game, revealed that the Korean fraction was forced to them because Starcraft led very well there.
It's a basic logic
In the Twitter thread (thanks, Windows Central), Petersen explained that Microsoft was quite stubborn to have a Korean faction in the game because Starcraft sold over three million copies. What is the connection? Neither Petersen knows.
“The project continued very well. We were almost completely finished, 5 weeks before the plan since January 2000. I was excited to move to Age of Empires 3,” he explained. “Then Microsoft called and we had an important conference call.”
The suits asked the team to introduce the Korean faction for the conquerors. However, the team hesitated because the Koreans were not historically conquerors. At least not compared to other civilizations in expansion. However, Microsoft's justification was: “Starcraft sold 3 million copies in Korea.”
“Here was my counterargument that seemed quite valid to me.” Starcraft has no koreans in it, so these sales had zero with Korean civilian. “” Microsoft repeated, “but … StarCraft sold 3 million copies in Korea.” Petersen eventually gave up and said, “I saw where it was going. Once someone simply repeats the previous argument, it is clear that they no longer work from logic or intelligence.”
He even explained that they did not receive time to get the new civilization, which led to several historical inaccuracies that caused quite a stir in Korea. One Microsoft official was allegedly taken into police custody. “And in the end we did not sell 3 million copies of Age of Empires 2 in Korea,” he concluded.
