The popular Steam gaming platform is terminated on chromebooks. Some of those who are currently using Steam on Google Chromebooks have found that they have only a few months left to enjoy it.
Steam has been introduced for Google Chromebooks since the end of 2022. Before that, Steam was not officially available for the platform, with most chromebooks containing energy -efficient systems that were not insufficient to play. However, Google and its partners began to introduce chromebooks with stronger hardware that could handle some games, and Steam was introduced to allow the owners of these more powerful systems to access its large library.
Steam for Chromebooks turns off
But now this opportunity ends because Steam for Chromebooks Beta has announced that it is sunset. As reported by 9to5Google, users have started to see Launcher messages that will inform them that Steam will be 1 January 2026 on Chromebooks. No interruption explanation has been offered except Google, which states it is a beta program and that users' participation “informs about the future of Chromebook Gaming”, which means that Google is not done with Chromebook games.
Since it was almost three years since the introduction of the program, it is likely that the players on Chromebooks are not enthusiastic about this development. However, his interruption may also mean that the project was not as successful as Google hoped. At a time when Steam for Chromebooks was introduced, numerous portable gaming systems, including a popular steam package, have recently entered the market.
Although it is an unfortunate step for those who enjoyed steam on Chromebooks, these players should still be able to play their steam games on another system. Steam Accounts of these users should be accessible by a standard PC and MacOS program, as well as with certain portable.
