Disappointing roguelite with a convincing story

I once heard about it Hotel Barcelona and they found that it was love of Swery (known Deadly premonition) and Suda51 (No more heroes), I was all in. 2,5D Roguelite, where you play as an American federal marshal whose body is taken over by a scary and mysterious serial murderer, strangely named Dr. Carnival, and cooperate on killing other murderers staying in a ghost hotel? That sounds incredible, isn't it? It's a solid idea on paper. In fact, however, is playing Hotel Barcelona It is not as fun as it seems, and it is a shame.

So, as I mentioned, it is a prerequisite that the main character, Justine, eventually seeks revenge for her father's premature death and takes her to the Barcelona Hotel, where a lot of crazy serial murderers live. The hotel ends up as your base where Justine “wakes up” whenever you die while running. He will connect with Dr. Carnival, a serial murderer with a lot of secrets to take off Baddies.

Fighting with Jacob at the Barcelona Hotel

There is only a handful of stages and bosses to get in Hotel BarcelonaBut they are basically 2D side modest dungeons with several rooms and the final boss at the end. Before fighting from the “final boss” and rolling credits, which lasted about 6-7 hours, about three main phases need to be completed.

I know it really doesn't sound much but the beginning Hotel Barcelona It is not for the weak heart. Even in normal difficulty mode, enemies and bosses can hit hard. And without many opportunities to heal and ensure that Justine will remain in good health before the boss's struggle proved to be challenging.

Fight at the Barcelona Stage Hotel

I wanted to enjoy a loop of flowing at the level, but after a few deaths I found that most levels were quite similar and indistinguishable. All enemies feel the same; Backdrops are disappointing; And overall, artistic style Hotel BarcelonaWith the exception of the beautiful 2D portrait character art during conversations, the blurry texture of the enemies and the world does not do much for me, and I found that it visually disappointed. I will say that Intro's animated boss is quite cool, but because you are dying a lot about these bosses, they will eventually be skipped on the line.

In the hotel you can use your collected resources to buy new weapons, upgrade your tree of skills, playing Pinball, replacing items with bartender and adding some modifiers to make the game more difficult to get more rewards. And as I mentioned, you die a lot in the game, but something interesting that I liked on the Roguelike aspect is that there are phantoms that join your run if you have died at this stage before.

You can have up to three at once and they basically imitate your entire course of this phase. So they will fight against their enemies, but they will still be able to attack bosses and enemies on your course. It really was useful when I had trouble with the boss, and then two or three of us immediately kicked the ass.

As for fighting and weapons Hotel Barcelona Go, I didn't love myself. It is a little clumsy and the impact when you attack enemies, it is simply not satisfactory. There are catans, hammers, saws, shotguns, flamewers and several other types of weapons. Still, I usually stuck to the initial type because he felt the most comfortable and useful. At the beginning of the game I will be honest, the fight felt terrible, but if you unlock more combos and parryphan and avoiding the tree of skills, it begins to feel a little more playable, but at the end of the day I will never skip and it is so frustrating.

Jacob Intro Cutscene Hotel Barcelona

For Janka fighting in Hotel BarcelonaA bland design of the stage and unpleasant problems, in fact, there is an interesting story and narration that made me more. I expected that every time I came back to the hotel, I would get much more pieces on the tradition, but that just didn't happen. There are not many cutscenes in Hotel Barcelona Be a shame, because the couple who are quite fun to watch like intro.

I can't talk much about what is going on between Justine and Dr. Carnival, but the relationship between them is quite convincing and I probably remember this aspect before fighting and real playing the game Hotel Barcelona. I think I wanted a stylish and super satisfactory combat system like No more heroesBut this is just a weak roguelite that could dig a little deeper into his mechanics and narration.

Opening hotel Cutscene Hotel Barcelona Justine

Once you find the credits, there are some neat secrets that I have found to be more pleasant than the main story mission, but even then it does not push the needle to think of this game on the higher echelon for the roguelite genre. Unfortunately, there are only too many games that have done it better than this.
