ZA's DLC gives Chimech a mega evolution

Pokemon Legends: ZA it came out just three weeks ago, but it's already getting more content in the form of the new Diancie side quest and the Mega Dimension DLC, which is now scheduled for release on December 10th. Many fans are wondering how to get Diancie into the game Pokemon Legends: ZA due to the Pokemon's incredibly low catch rate (and the fact that it fits the color scheme of Heal Balls, which also have a low catch rate), although the creature isn't usable in ranked battles yet. Things will change dramatically on December 10, when several returning Pokemon will be available and receive new Mega Evolutions, including Chimecho Gen 3.

Pokemon Legends: ZAThe second trailer for the Mega Dimension DLC was released yesterday and offers a better look at what's coming with the expansion:

Mega Chimecho in Pokemon Legends: ZA it has a very distinctive look that combines the general idea of Chimech as a Pokémon with the design of its pre-evolution, Chingling, whose silhouette is a gold/metal frame that holds several bells. This is an interesting take on Mega Evolution, and the fact that it gains Steel as a secondary type is also fantastic for Chimecho. However, you should be angry at his Mega Evolution rather than celebrating it, as it takes away more than it gives.

Say goodbye to regional Chimecho forms and intergenerational evolutions after Pokémon Legends: ZA

mega-chimecho

As a gimmick, Mega Evolution is the most popular of the series. Game Freak provides a way to give fully evolved creatures a new special form that is stronger than the base form, thanks to 100 extra stat points. However, this also technically means that all Pokémon capable of Mega Evolving cannot have further evolutions in future generations, and possibly no regional forms either. It's not a hard rule, but Pokemon Legends: ZAThe new DLC Mega Evolutions and the base game Mega Evolutions are all for pets without other forms, and no Mega Evolving capable Pokémon from the Gen 6 games received a regional form or evolution across generations.

This is a bad thing for Chimecho, as it has a BST of 455, and while it's not a terrible spread with 50 points in Attack and all other stats being higher, it's far from a good Pokemon. This is mainly due to:

  • Chimecho's low stats, which Mega Chimecho can only improve with BST 555 so far.

  • The move selection for Chimecho is pretty poor, and adding Steel as a secondary type for Mega Chimecho (Psychic/Steel) can only do so much.

  • Given that Pokemon Legends: ZAThe best teams usually use Metagross, sometimes even Mega Metagross, it's hard to justify picking Mega Chimecho when BST has 555 vs. Metagross 600 and Mega Metagross 700.

  • Chimecho getting a Mega Evolution means he most likely won't get a regional form and is pretty much guaranteed not to get a cross-gene evolution either.

Why Mega Chimecho Pokemon Legends: Z is a curse, not a blessing

Cross-gen evolutions are much better for a Pokemon's potential usefulness in battles because they are permanent additions. Mega Evolution is a trick linked Pokemon Legends: ZAand therefore temporary. While Pokemon Champions enabled by Mega Evolutions, it's unclear how popular the game will be and how much it will catch on in the competitive scene.

As such, Chimecho shouldn't have received a Mega Evolution and instead should have received a cross-gen evolution further down the line – possibly as soon as Gen 10 next year. Mega Chimecho might not move the needle in as much Pokemon Legends: ZAlet alone the entire series when that specific gimmick goes away. As cool as Mega Chimecho is, it's more of a curse than a blessing for this otherwise awesome Pokémon.

You could argue that a Mega Evolution for Chimecho is better than nothing, but waiting more time for him to get a proper evolution would be a better scenario.
