Astral Throne 2: Age of the Phoenix is a new Steam strategy roguelite RPG that combines run-based meta-progression with both grid-based and turn-based battles. Its premise and execution naturally invite comparison to the mix Hades and Final Fantasy Tactics.
Developed by Ontario, Canada's Zero Sun Games, Age of the Phoenix is a sequel to a game that is currently less than a year old –The Astral Throneoriginally released via Steam in early February 2025. Although not a significant commercial success, the original was well received by strategy RPG fans and earned general critical acclaim. It has a “Mighty” rating on OpenCritic based on an average score of 84 and a 100% recommendation rate, placing it in the 93rd percentile of all titles tracked by the platform.

Zero Sun Games claims that the sequel will retain the deep party synergy, hand-crafted encounters with great variety, and permadeath mechanics of its predecessor, while putting more emphasis on the narrative. Mechanically, it will still largely play as Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire signfeaturing turn-based battles on grid-based maps.
In between Final Fantasy Tactics– as well as battles, the upcoming title will include the meta progression mechanics seen in a typical roguelite. Runs that advance long-term quests and relationships that deepen between quests will be part of the pack, along with class-driven builds. The story of the game was written by Shami Stovall, an award-winning novelist known for fantasy works such as A time marked wizard and Frith's Chronicles.
Astral Throne 2 Targeting 2026 release, demo coming soon
Astral Throne 2: Age of the Phoenix it has only been confirmed for PC so far, i.e. Steam. While other versions remain an option, the original The Astral Throne never expanded beyond Valve's platform, so further ports are unlikely. Zero Sun Games hasn't released pricing yet, though if the first game is any indication, the sequel will likely launch for around $19.99. The Canadian developer is currently targeting a release in 2026. In a recent post on social media, the studio said it is finishing the demo in early November 2025 and plans to release it early next year. Given this timeline and the lack of a firm release window, a launch in the second half of 2026 seems more likely than the first, barring any delays.
