Capcom's highly rated game is coming to Xbox after 9 years

Tales of Monster Hunters is now available on the latest two generations Xbox console, as well as its sequel. With this pair of additions, Capcom's turn-based RPG series finally arrives on Xbox nearly a decade after its inaugural game first hit the market.

The Monster Hunter the franchise officially debuted on Microsoft's consoles Monster Hunter Frontier Z (formerly called MHF online), an MMORPG that was released for the Xbox 360 in 2010, but only in Japan. It took the franchise another eight years to reach Xbox gamers in the West Monster Hunter: World. MH Rise and MH Wilds followed in 2021 and 2025. However, Tales of Monster Hunters spin-off series has never been available on Xbox consoles – until now.

The Monster Hunter Stories franchise is finally making its Xbox debut

The long-awaited debut took place on November 14, when the first two Tales of Monster Hunters games released for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Latest version MHS is priced at $29.99 while MHS 2: Wings of Ruin sells for $10 more. Both numbers are consistent with their current listings on the PlayStation Store, Nintendo eShop, and Steam.

Monster Hunter Stories games for Xbox consoles

The Monster Hunter The spin-off series' Xbox debut comes just over a month after its first game — which boasts an average OpenCritic score of 79 and “very positive” user reviews on Steam — celebrated its ninth anniversary with a Japan-only 3DS release. Its Nintendo exclusivity ended in December 2017, when the turn-based RPG was released for Android and iOS devices in Japan. English mobile ports followed in 2018, and the game eventually made its way to PS4, Switch, and PC in June 2024. Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin it had a slightly less fragmented (but still spread out) pre-Xbox release, debuting on Switch and PC in July 2021, before coming to PS4 alongside the first game in June 2024. It's rated even better than its predecessor, underscoring its average OpenCritic score of 81.

Although the first two entries in the series took years to reach Microsoft consoles, their sequels will break that pattern. Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection has been confirmed as a daily title for the Xbox Series X/S since its reveal in the summer of 2025, and is currently scheduled to launch on March 13, 2026. If the series continues beyond that time, Capcom is expected to maintain a daily release for the Xbox, reflecting a broader industry trend towards releasing games that are not cross-platform.

While the main line Monster Hunter games are real-time action RPGs with gear-driven progression and highly flexible combat Tales of Monster Hunters spin-offs are turn-based JRPGs that draw from Pokemon formula, focusing on collecting and raising monsters, exploiting type matchups and strategic turn prediction. MHS degrees are generally more challenging than Pokemonwith players gaining new creatures by stealing eggs and hatching them instead of using Poke Balls.
