The Witcher 3: Wild HuntRomance options were originally completely different, as the game didn't initially force players to choose between two partners, a senior CD Projekt Red official revealed. The decision to make them more dramatic came relatively late Charmer 3's development, mainly because CDPR was looking for some je ne sais quoi.

While The Witcher 3 offers extensive romance options, most of which are presented as one-off flings. Geralt's only two potential long-term partners are Triss Merigold and Yennefer of Vengerberg. Their romantic quests must be followed solely to reach their (happy) conclusions. However, this was not always the case.
The Witcher 3 did not originally include a Triss-Yennefer Romance Choice
The Witcher 3The romance content originally did not include any kind of exclusive relationships. That's according to CDPR joint CEO Adam Badowski, who revealed this in a recent interview with PC Gamer. The creative team eventually changed their minds as they felt the story lacked enough personal conflict, although this was not immediately clear at the time. “There was a shortage something,” Badowski recalled, adding that once the idea of choosing between Yennefer and Triss came up, the developer realized what that “something” actually was.
The Witcher 3 love triangle was a “fairly late” addition
The love triangle was far from the first change to the game's original concept. “This decision [to add the Triss-Yennefer romance choice] it was done pretty late,” Badowski explained, characterizing the move as “great.” The executive did not specify whether the two romances were part of the game from the beginning. Triss was also romantically involved in the first two Charmer plays, but Yennefer was merely referred to in them, p Wild Hunt debuted in the CDPR franchise based on the books by Andrzej Sapkowski.

The Witcher 1 remake may take a different approach to romance than the original
Elsewhere during the interview, Badowski expressed regret over the inclusion Witcher 1's objectifying sex cards that were awarded for romantic encounters. “It was childish,” he remarked, remarking The Witcher 3 treats the subject matter more thoughtfully and remains truer to Sapkowski's “emotional aspects” of the book's characters. If we read between the lines, his notes suggest this Witcher 1 The remake, which was first confirmed to be in development for late 2022, will handle romance differently than the 2007 game.
If anyone outside of CDPR knows, a remake of the first one Charmer the game is still in high-concept development as of late 2025, though it may already be approaching pre-production. The studio's next game is The Witcher 4which has been in full production since November 2024 and is thus expected to hit the market in 2027-2028, barring any major setbacks.
