Grand Theft Auto 6 may still be a year away from its latest and hopefully final delay, but that hasn't stopped rumors of Rockstar's next game from continuing to circulate. Next up: whether the highly anticipated title will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2.
According to insider NateTheHate, a port of another Grand Theft Auto title has apparently not been ruled out. In fact, according to insiders, Rockstar is “doing tests” internally to see if a Switch 2 version is even possible. Plus, the company is making a real “effort” to see if things can work on Nintendo's latest console.
With the Switch 2 being far more powerful than the original Switch, and already seeing several high-profile games confirmed for release that would normally have skipped over the first Switch console, it's not entirely crazy to think that Rockstar and Take-Two would like to expand their pie with a Switch 2 release.
It also follows previous rumors that Take-Two wants to support the Switch 2. Back in February, well before the official launch of the Switch 2, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged that the company has a long-term partnership with Nintendo that could grow.
“We obviously have a long-term relationship with Nintendo,” Zelnick said. “We supported the platform when it made sense for each version.”
Perhaps more interestingly, he acknowledged that Nintendo's changing audience could see more support.
“There was a time when Nintendo's platforms were aimed at a younger audience, and that's reflected in our release schedule,” he added. “Today, with the Switch and potentially with the Switch 2, the Switch can support any audience.”
In the past, Nintendo has seen support from Rockstar
As it is, the much-maligned GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition has a Nintendo Switch port, even though the ever-popular Grand Theft Auto 5 doesn't. Similarly, LA Noire is also on Switch, another Rockstar title.
It was recently revealed that the Red Dead Redemption remaster will see a Switch 2 port, which will be free for those who own the original Red Dead Redemption Switch 1. Of course, we'd forget that one of the best and probably most underrated Grand Theft Auto titles, GTA: Chinatown Wars, was a Nintendo DS title! In other words, there is a certain history and familiarity that makes things all the more likely.
