The role of Mary Read in Assassin's Creed: Black Flag
Like many Assassin's Creed NPC (and from Assassin's Creed Shadowsat least one main character), Mary Read is inspired by the historical figure of the same name. Not much is known about the real Mary Read, other than the critical fact that she was one of the few confirmed pirates. This makes her the perfect character for a speculative fiction series like this Assassin's Creedbecause there is just enough information about her to keep the audience interested, but not so much that her story is limiting or predictable.
Mary Read introduced herself as a man among the other pirates Assassin's Creed: Black Flag he is, you guessed it, secretly a member of the Order of Assassins. This leg of the campaign would involve a Templar siege of Nassau in search of Read and Edward, culminating in a repeat of the famous real-world pirate story where Read and Anne Bonny protect their incapacitated male crew from the British Army.
According to McDevitt, this storyline was cut for gameplay and pacing purposes, but it would be an exciting way to learn more about one of the game's most interesting historical figures. Additionally, it would allow Edward to be more active in his quest for the Crystal Skull, which would further refine his recklessness and greed, which in turn would deepen the conflict between him and Mary Read, who regularly pushes Edward to be less selfish in the original.
