No one but Square Enix currently knows which way Final Fantasy heading after Final Fantasy 16although one might think that certain elements are already guaranteed. Following Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's success, for example, it would be natural to assume that Final Fantasy 17 — which will likely be the next major installment in the series — will bring turn-based combat back to the franchise. After all, Square Enix has publicly acknowledged the success Clair Obscuro and acknowledging turn-based RPGs as their roots earlier this year, Final Fantasy 17 would probably follow.
However, this may not be the best course of action for Square Enix to take with the next one Final Fantasyespecially considering what the fans actually want. Right now, the call for Final Fantasy going back to the roots seems to be loud as praise Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 continues, but while fans seem to want the next game in the series to back off in some way, there are other elements that Square Enix would rather leave behind. There's even an entire thread on Reddit Final Fantasy 17 it's already dedicated to fans voicing what they want to see in the next game – and expectations are numerous. It's an older thread, but it's being reviewed.
First FF17 Reddit Posts Favor FF7 Remake's Combat Style
Despite Clair Obscur: Expedition 33Being able to achieve such success with a turn-based combat system, most fans on the r/FFXVII thread prefer Final Fantasy 7 Remake's turn-based combat. In a post about a year ago Clair Obscur: Expedition 33Reddit user Enough_Food_3377 held a poll where fans voted on which combat system they would like to see in the next release Final Fantasy. Among the choices were ATB, Turn-Based, Action and FFVIIR-action style/ATB Hybrid.
How the poll turned out:
-
ATB (3 votes)
-
Moves (4 votes)
-
Action (4 votes)
-
FFVIIR/ATB Hybrid Style Event (12 votes)
Of course, there are several factors to consider here. First, there were only 23 total votes cast in this poll, and if there were many more, the scales might have tipped in favor of a different battle system than Final Fantasy 7 Remake'with. That being said, considering the FFVIIR-esque Action/ATB Hybrid variant, it still got three times as many votes as Turn-Based and Action, and even slightly more than ATB alone, the probability of fan preference Final Fantasy 7 RemakeThe combat system of the turn system seems higher.
Second, this survey was conducted earlier Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 triggered, which means anticipation Final Fantasy fans may have moved on since then. However, more posts were published after that Clair Obscurorelease that suggested fans would still prefer something other than turn-based combat Final Fantasy 17. But the consensus is also that another post wouldn't bring back real-time action combat Final Fantasy 16 and instead try to land somewhere in the middle. Another Reddit user praised Clair Obscuro's fight, expressing his hope that Final Fantasy they took note, but many comments in the thread either disagreed or said it was unlikely that Square Enix would go in that direction.
Many fans have stated throughout Final Fantasy 17 That Reddit thread Clair Obscur: Expedition 33The combat isn't strictly turn-based, as it uses real-time tactics, giving it more of a hybrid feel. Still, technically speaking, Clair Obscuro is a turn-based RPG, while the game as Final Fantasy 7 Remake leans more towards the action side of combat while still offering some degree of turn-based strategy. Judging by what fans have said on the site Final Fantasy 17 So the Reddit thread seems to be expecting the next major entry to be on the way Final Fantasy 7 Remake more than Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Final Fantasy 17's protagonist lives up to certain expectations
One of the most popular requests for Final Fantasy 17 (according to r/FFXVII Reddit anyway) is that it features a female protagonist as Final Fantasy 13's Lightning or Final Fantasy 6is Terra. In fact, some fans on a Reddit thread seem to think the lead is female Final Fantasy 17 is the “most obvious choice” at this point, considering the male-dominated entries the show has seen recently. Expectations are not necessarily as simple as “Final Fantasy 17 however, they should have a female protagonist,” and are instead more explicit in nature.
On one Reddit thread dedicated to conversations about Final Fantasy 17heroes, fans note clear qualities that they want the main character to have. “I want her to have a lot of personality,” said one user, while another added in a similar vein: “I want a cheerful and happy protagonist.” One user even said he'd like to see “a female anti-hero who comes closer to the edge and blurs the lines between anti-hero and villain,” but there were others in the thread who didn't necessarily express interest in a female lead. Instead, they said they hope Square Enix just has a happier, less moody protagonist than the series is known for.
Speculations about the setting of Final Fantasy 17 have been circulating
Fans also put in expectations Final Fantasy 17settings even though the game doesn't exist yet. One post on Reddit by user SalamiSalamander invites other fans to speculate on the setting for the next entry in the main series, and some pretty interesting ideas have been added to the thread.
Here are the biggest settings Final Fantasy the series has already explored:
-
High fantasy
-
Modern fantasy
-
Technical fantasy
-
Dark high fantasy
-
Steampunk
-
Sci-fi
Under the post, fans expressed a number of wishes Final Fantasy 17settings. Among the settings mentioned were post-apocalyptic, wild west, cyberpunk and space opera. Most of the comments seem to lean more towards post-apocalyptic, which Final Fantasy 10 performed to some extent.
Fans have requests for Final Fantasy 17's lead artist
Finally, another fan-favorite anticipation is already on the way Final Fantasy 17 is its main artist. A post by user JustinCredible1991 on Reddit listed Tetsuya Nomura as a popular choice, though just as many fans seemed to be opposed to the idea. Nomura has contributed to art in many ways Final Fantasy games, but led character and visual design in posts like Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy 8, Final Fantasy 10 and 10-2and Final Fantasy 13.
Other comments on the same post say they would prefer if Akihiko Yoshida (Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy 12, Final Fantasy 14) made art for Final Fantasy 17. The OP also mentioned Yusuke Mogi as a potential lead artist for Final Fantasy 17and another comment in the post mentions Osamu Kamikokuryo, who has been the art director for several years Final Fantasy games in the late 2000s and 2010s.
