How to defeat Tian Ying

Tian Ying with her hands together at the place where the winds meet.

Tian Ying is excellent not only in this game but in gaming in general. He's a difficult boss, yes, but also it has a rather disproportionate three phaseswhich are all incredibly difficult.

There is no indication of that either. Unlike other bosses that have a number of health bars and therefore stages, Tian Ying grants you no such grace. In order to advance to the next stage, you must completely deplete all health indicators if you fail any of them, you have to start over.

Each stage also feels completely different from one another no shared moves. This means you have to adapt on the fly to beat him. You'd better get better at that deflection button though.

Phase one

Tian Ying wears several masks and holds a staff where the winds meet.

In the first stage, Tian Ying is the easiest. It's slower than other stages and gives you plenty of time to hit it. Be aggressive on him as he generally approaches you slowly. His attack strings are fairly well telegraphed likewise, with most of it being just swings of his staff that can be deflected and drain a lot of his Qi.

He has another attack where he quickly knocks the staff down. If you're in front of him when he does it, he'll probably follow up with a quick palm strikeso watch out for it and prepare to be diverted.

The big move to watch out for is when it stops standing still and starts charging without being able to rotate it anymore. He and his staff will be preparing a powerful slam throughout the arena, although there is a unique interaction here. Just before he strikes his stick, it will prompt for a button. Pressing this button activates Meridian Touch, knocking him down and canceling the attack.

However, this interaction can occur at any distance try to do it right in front of him so you'll have more time to attack him when he's down.

This makes up most of his attacks. It is quite possible pass this stage completely intact with patience with how predictable and readable all of his attacks are. And that's the end of the easy part.

Phase two

In the second stage, you are completely transported to a new arena. Here, Tian Ying drops the stick and he decided to use his feet and fists instead, he pummels you with lightning fast combos. Slow attacks in the first phase are completely gone, and the abundant effects going on can make it a bit difficult to track exactly when an attack is flying towards you.

For the most part, assume that if Tian hits you, he will do several more attacks, as he rarely stops at one. He also has a place he will do a series of impact kicks at you in quick succession. Just spam the redirect button while you're at it and you should redirect them because they come out so fast.

Successfully parrying this attack in subsequent rematches against Tian Ying gives you progress towards unlocking the Free Morph mystical skill.

Another of Tian's moves involves him he showed off one of the statues from the background to double his own punches. There are two versions of this attack. One has the duo attacking at high speed with a flurry of concentrated strikes in a small area. The other forces them to perform slower, stronger punches that hit a wider area.

Tian is locked in place during this attack him from behind if you can't parry the attacks successfully. Some martial arts can also cancel this attack, giving you a few seconds to attack Tian before he recovers.

Another of Tian's main attacks has him floating in the air in a meditative posture while taking control of one of the statues in the background. You can attack him with arrows while doing this, although it's not particularly worth it. Instead, focus on parrying incoming attacks as they deal massive Qi damage.

However, the first wave of hands is easily legible the second attack is much harder to read because there is no obvious animation for it. If you can't get the deflection timing on him, it's better to just dodge him.

The third phase

The third and final stage of Tian Ying it may not be his hardest phasebut after downsizing from the previous two, it can be hard to survive even a single mistake.

At this stage, Tian uses his dagger to fight you and teleports around the arena to surprise you. Because of this, there are very few openings for you to attack him. Deviation to drain his Qi becomes the main method during this part of the fight.

Make sure you stay on Tian during this stage. When he disappears, the lock may appear to be broken, but when he reappears, it will reconnect and point the camera to face him. This is useful as will attack almost immediately after respawningand that should help you reduce your timing.

At one point in the fight, Tian summons his sand clones. They attack you often and have quite a lot of health. Tian himself disappears during this phase and reappears to attack periodically. Avoid attacking the clones though. Instead, deflect Tian when he appears and this will cause the clone to disappear. After three diversions, all clones will be gone and this deals a lot of Qi damage to Tian.

This covers most of his attacks. It might take a while, but once you get used to it, the combat will match its rhythm. Once he's defeated, all you have to do is swim away from the cave to finish the fight and collect your rewards.
