Divinity's default area can be the beach again

Larian finally revealed Divinity at The Game Awards today. In Geoff Keighley's own words, it will be even “bigger than Baldur's Gate 3”. The studio is clearly excited about the upcoming game, as indicated by the sculpture in the desert that everyone has been speculating about. While we don't have any other information about the game, we might have an idea about the starting area.

Larian likes to start games on beaches. In Baldur's Gate 3, Divinity: Original Sin and its sequels, the game begins with the main character waking up on a beach after a short prologue on a vessel. Fans of the studio fully expect Larian to do the same with Divinity, but a now-deleted tweet from studio head Swen Vincke may have just confirmed it.

Divinity: On the Beach

As spotted by magur76 on Reddit, Vincke tweeted a picture of the beach yesterday with the caption: “Remains one of my favorite running spots. Lots of memories here.” Of course, the studio head might just love jogging on that particular beach and have fond memories of it, but fans think it could have been a cheeky reference to Larian's tradition of starting his games on the beach.

The comments didn't disappoint because they knew what it could mean. “I love that every Larian game starts on the beach! It's as iconic as starting a game as a prisoner in TES,” said one fan.” Another said: “I won't believe it until I see it, the beach in Larian would make no sense.”

There's no particular reason for this, but after three games it's become a tradition for the studio. Maybe the developers think that the beach being a relatively open place is a good way for players to get used to moving around and exploring. Or maybe Vincke made a deal with the beach deity to ensure the studio's success, and this was the price.

Given the title and how Vincke had “lots of memories” at the beach, perhaps this is his way of putting something personal into each game he works on.
