Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is officially here, and while most players are still digging into its depths, a classic power-scaling conundrum has bubbled back to the surface: Master Chief vs. Samus Aran. As both video game franchises continue to grow and new elements are introduced, the brawl becomes even more enticing to imagine. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is no different in this regard, considering all the latest tools at Samus' disposal.
To really get to the heart of this argument and objectively (jokingly) declare who comes out on top, players will need to look back at the performances and traits of both of these characters. Samus and Master Chief have a lot in common, but the things that make them stand out over their long histories will be key in determining which video game character is the strongest. Given the range of arguments for each character, this heated debate can be a little overcooked after all is said and done.
Metroid Prime 4 is Samus Rolls Most Competition
-
Significantly superior mobility
-
Much higher damage output
-
Much more durability and shields
-
Combat feats against God level threats
As for the pros, the first thing that comes to mind is Samus's Power Suit, which allows her to transform into a Morph Ball and move through tight spaces. Space jumps and bolt attacks give her even more maneuverability, as does her Spider Ball ability, which allows her to stick to walls. Master Chief is agile for a Spartan, but his mobility is still fundamentally based on the capabilities of the actual human body; she also doesn't have the privilege of Vi-0-La, Samus' new high-tech ride Metroid Prime 4.
Mobility aside, Samus' beam arsenal is just absurdly destructive. Plasma Beam constantly melts through enemies of all kinds, while Ice Beam freezes them and Wave and Nova Beams literally bypass various forms of solid matter. Additionally, the iconic Power Bombs are borderline tactical nukes in most depictions.
Samus' Fighting and Feats
Samus' weapons are sci-fi superweapons and her durability is very similar in that sense. Samus' wide range of suits guarantee resistance to extreme environments. He also has shields and biological enhancements from Chozo DNA, meaning additional inhuman strength, durability, and reflexes.
Aran's many heroic deeds are also often on a different scale. Metroids canonically drain life energy from enemies instantly, and Ridley, the so-and-so, is a giant dragon who is also the recognized leader of the space pirates. It's already absurd, the kind of headache it would cause, and Phazon-enhanced monsters (including a shadow version of Samus herself) capable of disrupting planetary ecosystems haven't even earned a mention yet.
Halo's Master Chief remains in the fight
-
Superior tactical intelligence and lifelong military training
-
MJÖLNIR Armor and Combat AI Synergy
-
Weapons intended for combat against humans
-
Excellent psychological and situational adaptability
Samus might seem like an easy winner now, but what if HaloWhatever Master Chief is, he's stubborn. With Spartan-II training since childhood, Chief has years of experience commanding squads, improvising under overwhelming odds, and maneuvering massive Covenant units. Chief's X factor is that these skills mean he rarely has to just overpower opponents (although he often can).
The technical lore about Chief's MJÖLNIR armor is incredibly thick. However, its main advantage is its capacity for an AI companion, be it Cortana or The Weapon, to support everything it does. Nanosecond-level targeting and battlefield analysis are huge force multipliers, and canonically the AI allows him to perform movements beyond normal human neurological limits.
Halo's Combat has undeniably evolved
HaloLegendary weapons also hit harder than many realize. Spartan lasers and fuel rod cannons are one thing, but Forerunner weapons (if enabled) operate on highly advanced principles that surpass Covenant technology. Power bombs can vaporize people, sure, but the humble predecessor digitizes them, which seems a lot more complicated.
Last but not least are Master Chief's myriad bona fides that undoubtedly show the man thrives in no-win situations. He constantly outsmarts Forerunner designs, routinely violates the Covenant, and regularly jumps into the vacuum of space when it's mostly unnecessary. It has also survived several floods, even stopping some fairly extensive ones without using any Halo rings, which the Forerunners once believed to be essentially impossible.
Samus vs Master Chief: Who Will Win?
It really depends on how the match is framed, as Chief adapts quickly to unknown threats, a very important element when facing a fighter as skilled as Samus. That means Samus is strong, plain and simple. Let's assume this is a direct comparison of their general standard loadouts and feats as they exist in their games/story; in which case Samus wins more often than not, I think, because her offensive and defensive tech is just science fiction on a grander scale.
It's hard to imagine Chief surviving a Power Bomb, Screw Attack, or high-level weapon for long. In addition to these more esoteric abilities, Samus is also simply stronger, faster, and more mobile. If combat allows for greater consideration of tactics and environmental options, Chief becomes much more competitive.
With vehicles, heavy weapons, and time to assess her skills, Master Chief was able to force more favorable terms. Still, in a neutral “arena fight” with no preparation, Samus will almost certainly take it. The gap in power is too great because the fighters are basically on completely different scales.
The matchup only works in narrative terms
That comment about scale is important to note because, regardless of logic, the debate persists (and is fun to participate in) because it's the same kind of archetype expressed across genres: Samus is a one-woman interstellar weapon of mass destruction operating in space with dragon pirates. Chief comes from a more grounded, militaristic sci-fi background. Both are equally iconic for being one-person armies, but nowhere near the same power charts.
So sure, Samus will win this fight, especially with the new technology introduced in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond pushing her further forward. After all, if sci-fi fans need heroes to compare them to, the debate will rage on and on. Hearing what loyalists from both camps can latch onto or conjure up is the funnest part.
