Paladin's Blessed Shield skill is insanely powerful Diablo 4 thanks to its ability to bounce and damage multiple enemies in one throw. It has a number of upgrades that greatly change the way the skill works, and of the three options available to Blessed Shield, Shield of Retribution is probably the most interesting.
Shield of Retribution removes the iconic bounce mechanic of the Blessed Shield and turns it into a slow-moving, short-range grenade that explodes multiple times. With this tweak, Blessed Shield's famous AoE damage is concentrated into a much smaller area of effect, and with the amount of damage multipliers available for Juggernaut's abilities, it can cause some seriously stupid damage numbers in Diablo 4.

Description |

Clash – penalty |
A basic skill that greatly increases Thorns damage |
|
Blessed Shield – Shield of retribution |
Turns Blessed Shield into a short-range nuke that deals damage to Thorns before exploding |
|
Fanaticism Aura – Rite of Vengeance |
Passively improves attack speed and crit stats; activate to weaken enemies |
|
Aura of Defiance – Rite of Prayer |
Passively improves defense and generates Resolve; activate to get Unstoppable |
|
Aegis – Faith is my shield |
Gain increased block chance and mark enemies with Judgment |
|
Arbiter of Justice – Seraph's Wings |
Enter Arbiter form and gain significant buffs and synergy with Argent Veil |
To play this build, use Arbiter of Justice and spam Evade while clearing the maps. When you run into a tough enemy or boss, use Clash and then manually cast Shield of Retribution. Switch to Arbiter form and run around your target to maximize damage.
Shield of Retribution deals an absurd amount of damage when set up correctly. It trades range for damage, meaning your overall net speed will be lower compared to other Blessed Shield buffs. However, with the Argent Veil ring and the Arbiter, we completely negate this weakness.
Aegis with Faith is my shield giving us both increased survivability and a massive 90% damage multiplier thanks to one of our Paragon Nodes. This should help you survive those upper levels of Torment while allowing you to take down bosses in seconds.
Fanaticism and Aura Defiance they're great for getting passive stats, though the weakness effect from the former is great for further buffing our damage through passive synergies, while the unstoppable from the latter keeps us from being stunned.
You only need max Blessed Shield and Arbiter of Justice for this build. Keep the rest at 1/5 unless you get bonus ranks from items.

To summarize, it gives you bonus damage and survivability, but with a special focus on Blocking and Fortify. Block-related effects are a no-brainer for Blessed Shield builds, but Fortify will be more of an issue.
How can you fortify yourself with a Paladin?
IN Diablo 4 In Season 11, players will gain access to Divine Gifts, which contains Belial's Essence of Lies. With this equipped, players gain 1% of their maximum health as Fortify per second.
Aside from seasonal buffs, your best bet is to get Fortify use Fanaticism Aura – Rite of Redemption. You'll lose Rite of Vengeance's crit damage and convenience, but you'll heal and gain a percentage of your health each time an enemy dies within your aura.
Paladin's Oath
Since Shield of Retribution is a Juggernaut skill, this build will use Juggernaut Oath to turbocharge Blessed Shield's damage while also preventing us from losing Resolve stacks when we get hit.. The build doesn't have much (if any) synergy with the other Oaths, so Juggernaut is the best choice.
Equipment and Aspects
Equipment is very important to this build, so we're going to focus on the core items that make this build work.
White Dove Ward
This is a unique shield that doubles the damage of Blessed Shield. By default, it will increase your damage by up to (x)177%, but if you cast another build, your next 3 Blessed Shield casts will receive double this bonus and cost 7 Faith less.
If you combine Ward of the White Dove with all the other damage multipliers available to the Paladin, the damage from Blessed Shield will be astronomical. You can pair it with any legendary sword, but ideally you should use it with Griswold's Opus for bonus crit damage.
A veil argent
Argent Veil is one of the best uniques for any Paladin that uses basic skills and the ultimate Arbiter of Justice. This automatically casts Shield of Retribution for you as long as you move around in Arbiter form, in which you will constantly be thanks to Arbiter of Justice.
You can still play builds without Argent Veil, but it won't be as fast and hands-free. If you don't already have this ring, replace it with anything that can help you keep your faith (preferably
Ring of the Starless Sky).
Judgment on Auriel
This amulet gives you all of the Arbiter of Justice upgrades for free, while giving you bonus damage and damage reduction for each skill level you have for the skill. Judgment of Auriel isn't completely mandatory, but it's a great quality-of-life upgrade that allows you to allocate more skill points for other abilities/passives.
Razor blade
A good chunk of Shield of Retribution's damage is cut from your Thorns, and with all the Thorns buffs we get from our abilities, we might as well use Razorplate. If you have better chest armor like Shroud of False Death, use it.
Other legendary aspects and stats
|
Aspect |
Effect |
|
Juggernaut's Covenant |
Consuming Resolve with Juggernaut's Oath deals additional damage |
|
Penalty |
Juggernaut deals increased multiplier damage to bosses and mob controlled enemies |
|
Indomitable |
Gain additional armor and damage resistance based on block chance |
|
Arbiter's Zephyr |
Arbiter's Evade cooldown is reduced |
When tempering your gear, try to reduce the cooldown and duration of the arbiter enough until the duration of the arbiter form reaches or exceeds the cooldown of Arbiter of Justice.
Paragon plate
As with most others Diablo 4 Paladin builds, setting up a Paragon Board for this one is fairly simple. Grab those with general damage and survival nodes; the fewer conditional buffs the better. With this in mind, we recommend the following:
- Roost: Get bonus damage based on your armor
- Withstand: Take bonus damage when you are fortified
- Shieldbearer: Get bonus damage based on your block chance
- Conviction: Deal (x)90% more damage to enemies marked with Judgment
And for glyphs, use the following:
- Challenger increase damage against elites
- Apostle increase damage against vulnerable enemies
- Arbitrator increase your damage for every second you spend in Arbiter form
- Chip for more physical damage
These should fit into any of the above Paragon boards, but if not, level the glyphs to extend their range.
