Wouldn't it be nice to be able to stave off starvation without having to constantly stay on top of your farming and animals?

This fully automated chicken farm will keep you supplied with pre-cooked chicken, meaning you won't have to worry about running out of fuel, nor will you have to worry about breeding or slaughtering. Here is a comprehensive guide on how to make an automatic chicken farm in Minecraft.

Updated on 27 December 2025 by Helen Ashcroft: In Minecraft 1.20, the way chickens interact with lava sources has changed, and as a result, we've adapted this design to a new way of creating automatic boiled chicken farms. The materials are very similar, but you will need a cauldron and a flint which were not required before.

How does an automatic chicken farm work?

Completed automatic chicken farm without chickens inside in Minecraft.

Chickens in minecraft it will be lay eggs regularlywhich can be thrown that hatch more chickens. An automatic farm works by having a supply of egg-laying chickens. They are then fell into the dispenserwhich can be activated 'throw' them. Thrown eggs have a chance spawn a chicken.

This egg tossing setup provides a second set of chicks. The second set will be they will grow and then fall into the lava cauldron which at the same time cooks and kills themdescent boiled chicken which is sent to the chest.

Because the supply of chickens is replenished chickens above naturally laying eggs, the farm is self-sufficient, while it is charged. He is too easy magnification you will need more chicken.

Close-up of the dispenser that goes into the chest in Minecraft.

to begin with place your chest wherever you want your collection point to be a connect the hopper to the rear. To do this, crouch and look towards the back of the chest.

If your hopper is properly attached to the chest, funnel below the hopper will show towards the back that. If you want to try it easily, it's enough throw something into the hopper and make sure it ends in the chest.

A Minecraft chest with a hopper that goes into it. There is a pebble on the top of the reservoir.

Now, place the pebble on top of the tray. You will have to hold shift to place it otherwise it just opens the hopper. That's what chickens will keep dying and because it is only half a blockobjects that sit on it can be collected over the block at the hopper below.

Minecraft chest with a hopper behind it with a pebble on top. The dispenser is attached to two dirt blocks and faces the stone mason.

Other, place the dispenser facing the rocker. The easiest way to do this is place two dirt blocks in the column behind where the dispenser will go. Then stand to the chest and place the dispenser against dirt block. This will force it face to you and dose to the mason.

The chest, hopper, rocker, and dispenser now have an additional hopper that goes into the dispenser in Minecraft.

Other place the second tray showing down into the dispenser. You will have to climb up and place it from above. We used clay blocks as temporary stairs before removing them.

Now you will have to add a boiler above the stone and next to the hopper. Once the boiler is in place use a lava bucket fill it up. This will be cook chicken

Make sure that the hopper goes into the dispenser and not into the boiler!

The hopper is where the chickens will stand, so wrap it with a glass to prevent them from escaping. Place some more glass around the mason stop fledglings spawned. You can too block in the sides of the lava cauldron stop chickens shearing, but they he won't run away from here.

How to engage Redstone

Chicken farm with stone cutter and lava cauldron with brick back on redstone.

You will need to create a 2 x 4 platform made of solid blocks place the circuit, behind the dispenser. You will also need a block to the right dispensers.

The redstone circuit fires when the dispenser gets the egg into it, run it burn the eggs and give it a chance spawn a chicken.

From the back of the dispenser, place the comparator outwards to the repeater. You will have to stand next to the chest and place from this side. The grader should havedual nodes on the side next to the dispenser and repeater he should have them farthest from the comparator.

From the repeater, place another comparator away from the building (same direction as before). At the end of this “line” place one redstone dust.

Now, the head back to the dispenser and face itwith the front of the farm behind. on the right side, add one solid block. Now, add one repeater towards the fixed block; both nodes should be on the side closest to the block. finally add three stacks of redstone dust per repeater. Both “rows” should contain four items, creating a circle of 2×4 area.

When the egg enters the hopper, it will emit a signal which immediately feeds the dispenser below. Each egg that enters the hopper will shoot the last egg to enter the hopperso there will always be one in the chamber. This is the “automatic” part of your automatic cooked chicken farm.

Immediately after building, the loop will not light. If so, empty the dispenser and turn it off. Other, click a singular node on the second comparator to light up. This should be the one that is three blocks from the dispenserwith redstone dust protruding from the back. With the loop on, whenever something gets into the dispenser it fires.

How to get chickens to the farm

Adding chickens to an automatic chicken farm in minecraft.

Now for the hard part: lure some chickens up the hole. You will want to place several plates on the glass blocks to make the hole deeper so that once the chickens fall in, they cannot escape.

If there are chickens nearby, you can get them follow you with seeds. Consider creating a “staircase” made of temporary blocks to get the chickens to the top of the building. Or you can throw the egg into the hole until you get at least two chickens, then multiply them.

Do not add more than 24 chickens on the tile. Only 24 can exist before cramming entities kills them and causes system problems.

Once you have the chickens in the holeyou can either leave the plates on site or block the top with a fence post. The beauty of just using boards is that the farm is completely fireproof.

How long does it take to get cooked chicken?

Fully finished simple car chicken farm with chickens inside in Minecraft.

When you first build it takes a while for the farm to start working. It is because chickens on top need grow before they start laying eggs.

Once they lay their eggs the chicks hatched from these eggs will be chicks. They also need these grow before they will clip into the lava and they die, leaving behind tasty cooked chicken pieces (and some feathers).

Once a cycle was created, it should tick nicely, but it will take about half an hour start properly, depending on whether you need it wait for the chickens on top to grow.

How to speed up your farm

Expanded chicken farm with four chicken trays above a kettle and a stone in minecraft.

If you want it to be faster, simple spread the hopper at the top into a row. Place three hoppers going into each other and then into the one that feeds the dispenser. They can run above the redstone circuit.

Spread the edges of the glass and plate around the entire line. Now you can fit up to 96 chickens on top which makes the farm much faster. If you find raw chicken comes through you probably have cramming entities at the stonemason's. To prevent this, rraise chickens in the upper part.
