What is Beast of Reincarnation, the new IP coming from Pokémon Developer Game Freak?

When Beast from ReincarnationWhen the first trailer dropped, I was immediately freaked out by the revelation that Game Freak would make it out of all developers. Pokemon Fans will no doubt perk up when they see the name, as Game Freak has been running the monster-collecting video game franchise for decades, effectively serving as a factory for the franchise's staples. Beast from Reincarnation will be the first noPokemon AAA game – a historical moment that is difficult to overestimate.

It would be one thing if Beast from Reincarnation were something like a Pokemon clone or spiritual successor, but most certainly not. The game looks closer Princess Mononoke than the eponymous media giant The Pokémon Company, where simplified turn-based combat was replaced An axe– slashing, dodging and parrying style. The tone is considerably darker than anything Game Freak has done before, and the art design is decidedly grim as well. It's still pretty mysterious, but its reveal trailer and the sparse story information Game Freak has shared so far offer plenty to chew on.

Beast from Reincarnation takes place in a post-apocalyptic future, presumably caused by the titular beast itself, which according to the trailer appeared “a long time ago”. The beast of reincarnation spreads “destruction” everywhere, “corrupts all living things.” Visually, this beast is depicted as an elk-like creature that accelerates the growth and decay process of any flora it touches.

The appearance and symbolism of rebirth and regrowth of the Beast is very reminiscent of reincarnation Princess Mononoke's Spirit of the Forest, to the point where it's likely Game Freak is paying deliberate homage to Studio Ghibli.

Players take on the role of Emma Sealer, the “Blighted One,” who is ostracized from society. Along with a dog named Koo, Emma must travel through the game's lush world to avert the extinction of humanity, possibly by killing the Beast of Reincarnation itself. Again, it's all pretty vague, but Beast from Reincarnation It seems to prompt some interesting themes such as the balance between humanity and nature and the horrors of inevitable death and decay. Needless to say, it seems thematically much more complex than Pokemon.

What is the game Beast of Reincarnation?

Part of Emma's “Blighted” status is the ability to control plant life, which in turn gives her some advantages in combat and traversal situations. IN Beast from ReincarnationIn the reveal trailer, we can see Emma growing a thick coil of vines to form a bridge, and also generating a sort of viney hook to pull herself up to the boss. The middle battle hook in particular looks like it was straight out Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. This is far from the only parallel between the two Beast from Reincarnation and FromSoftware's 2019 samurai masterpiece: they seem to have very similar fencing and parrying mechanics.

There were countless of them An axe– like over the years, though maybe Beast from ReincarnationPlant and dog abilities will help set him apart from his peers Star Blade and Lies P. It is also worth noting Beast from ReincarnationSci-Fi Premise: Emma seems to encounter grotesquely beautiful monsters and hostile machines in equal measure. This is probably due to the game setting 4026; it would be interesting to see Game Freak flex its sci-fi muscles and offer a deep, multi-faceted look at this far-future technology.

Beast from Reincarnation is definitely far away Pokemonand Game Freak seems to be trying to reach new demographics. Players will have to wait and see how that plays out, but for now Beast from Reincarnation looks like a pretty solid, if slightly generic, action slasher.
