Gol D. Roger had huge ambitions right from the start. While fans didn't actually see the beginning of his pirate journey, what they did see through Rayleigh was a flashback where Roger showed up one day and asked him to join him on an adventure that turned the world upside down. Roger was already strong at this point and later his strength increased even more.
One strange thing about Roger is that he has never eaten devil fruit. Throughout his life, Roger stayed away from this force for one reason or another, as did the vast majority of his pirate crew.
