A new report from Jez Corden of Windows Central suggests that a StarCraft a third-person shooter is in the works at Blizzard and could be revealed later this year. This recent report builds on a 2024 rumor that claimed the former Far Cry Executive producer Dan Hay is leading the work on the mystery StarCraft shooter.
As any longtime fan knows, Blizzard has a pretty infamous history StarCraft shooters. Not announced until September 2002, StarCraft: Ghost was set up as a third-person stealth action shooter that would allow players to take on the role of Nova, a Terran spec ops agent. After several major delays in the early 21st century, development took place StarCraft: Ghost was delayed indefinitely by Blizzard, but the game would not be officially “cancelled” until September 2014, when Blizzard president Mike Morhaime confirmed via an interview with Polygon that the shooter had been axed. a second StarCraft a shooter codenamed 'Ares' was also in development, but was canceled in June 2019, reportedly so that its developers could help with Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4development. According to insider Jason Schreier StarCraft: Ares can also be canceled as it has similar gameplay Battlefieldwhich was allegedly a problem point for Activision as Battlefield was considered direct competition Call of Duty.

Many StarCraft fans will soon find themselves looking for something similar to play. Here are the best games to scratch that itch.
The long-rumored StarCraft shooter could be revealed at BlizzCon 2026
On January 7, 2026, Jez Corden via Windows Central published a report titled “Xbox in 2026 – What to expect from Team Green this year and beyond”. As the title suggests, the report sees Corden speculating about what Xbox might reveal and release this year, based on general industry rumblings and information provided by his own sources. This report contains speculations about both games confirmed for Xbox 2026, such as Fable and Gears of War: E-Dayas well as projects that are currently only the subject of leaks and rumors such as Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas remodels.
About a third of the way into Jez Corden's report, an insider shares what he expects to see at BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard's annual convention that has been running since 2005. Corden suspects that the new expansions for Diablo 4 will be revealed along with World of Warcraft12th expansion “The Last Titan” and a “major update” for both Overwatch and Hearthstone. New Overwatch and Warcraft BlizzCon 2026 may also feature mobile games, according to Corden.
But probably the most interesting part of Corden's BlizzCon talk is this StarCraft will “most likely” become the headline of this year's convention, and more precisely, the long-talked about one StarCraft the shooter will be at the center of the action. This third attempt by oa StarCraft Sagittarius was first heard of as early as September 2024, with Bloomberg's Jason Schreier mentioning its existence in his book PLAY NICE: The Rise, Fall and Future of Blizzard Entertainmentwhere he also stated that the former Far Cry Executive producer Dan Hay directed the project. In Corden's Jan. 7 message, he says he has “confirmed these rumors as true via [his] own sources.” It should be noted that Schreier's original mention of the project simply calls it a “shooter,” while Corden uses the term “third-person shooter.”
While Dan Hay was originally tasked with overseeing development of Blizzard's unannounced survival game when he joined the company in 2022, the game was canceled in January 2024, eight months before Jason Schreier's book was published. Although Blizzard has not made any official statement regarding the rumors StarCraft shooter, possibly taking center stage at BlizzCon 2026, would make a lot of sense if it actually existed with StarCraft franchise idle since 2017 StarCraft Remastered and the last full-fledged entry in the series is preparing to turn 16.
