Some of the best detective stories of all time tend to hide things in plain sight, only to shame readers for not seeing it right away. Anime openings tend to do that too, spoiling things that come later in the season that manga fans might pick up on but new viewers might miss. Even the best RPGs to touch PlayStation consoles had obvious story bits spoiled beforehand if players were paying attention.
10 Underrated JRPGs That Can Be Called Masterpieces
They may not have the impact of Final Fantasy 7, but these JRPGs are still worthy of praise.
Some players like to play detective and guess the twists and turns. Not all of them will be exciting, but they are worth thinking about. Were they set up to wink at the player or were they an oversight by the developers? It may be a secret they take to their grave. Either way, these plots are complicated to discuss, but here are some good summaries.
The following examples will contain spoilers.
Final Fantasy 8
Security forces
Final Fantasy 8's the Summons version is called Guardian Forces or GFs. Players can equip them with characters, draw magic from monsters, and then equip spells on their GFs to increase stats instead of relying on equipment. It's a convenient system for warrior cadets like Squall, the main character, but there's a problem. If players spend time talking to everyone in Balamb Garden and reading emails at the beginning, they will learn about a drawback involving memory loss due to these GFs taking up brain space. This helps set up the entire playable cast sharing a collective amnesia over knowing each other as kids, which also involved magic, but could just as easily have been blamed on the GF.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Gone too soon
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 it has a lot of wild revelations and players could hypothetically predict the big one that includes the entire world existing in the painting. This would require heavy guessing from the player, but one twist they could easily predict is the fate of Gustavo, who starts out as the protagonist. Every character has a skill tree, and his is pretty small compared to the others, meaning he could get a boost later to expand it, or die. This small detail could have been enough for the players to learn about his death in the first act.
Dragon Quest 11: Echoes Of An Elusive Age
Talking about Tockles
Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age is a long game and it usually takes a long time to get to the supposed final boss, which is about sixty hours. Oddly enough, there are small ghost-like creatures that players can see as they travel, which they later learn are called Tockles. Players cannot talk to them and no one acknowledges their existence because only the player can see them. By the time players get to the final fight and no one approaches them, or even long before, players might have guessed that they were bound for a big reveal, which they were. After this boss fight goes badly, players can talk to Leader Tockle to go back in time, set things right, and easily add another twenty to thirty hours to the experience.
Fallout 4
where is my child
Fallout 4 it allows players to create a female and male character at the start which is set before the bombs are dropped, and then players can choose which one to be the main character. The happy couple also have a son, Shaun, and when all hell breaks loose, players jump into a cryochamber and their wife jumps into one with Shaun.
8 super long JRPGs that are so good you'll want to play them twice
They may take 80 hours, but fans will want to sink another 80 hours after completing these JRPGs.
During cryosleep, players wake up to see two people opening their husband's case, kill them, and then take Shaun. After passing out, players wake up and embark on a quest to find their child in a newly discovered post-apocalyptic setting. But since cryosleep can last for years, players probably figured out their kid was going to be an old coder before they saw him again.
Final Fantasy 10
Dreams Of The Faith
Final Fantasy 10 opens with Tidus playing Blitzball in his home of Zanarkand, which is then attacked by a giant tidal wave and monsters. After fighting for his life, Tidus awakens from his home, and when he finds civilization again, Yuna and her guards explain that it is impossible for him to be from Zanarkand, as it was destroyed thousands of years ago. It's a mystery and some players may think there's a multi-dimensional or time travel situation going on, but it's even darker than some fans might suspect. As it is soon discovered that people who are dead can still take on corporeal form as the Dream of Faith, they may figure out that Tidus is essentially a ghost.
NieR: Automata
Mankind's last hope
NieR: Automata begins on a space station, humanity's last bastion, where two battle androids, 9s and 2b, are assigned to descend on Earth and help rid it of the robots that occupied it many years ago. Their mission is given to them by human decree, but they never see any humans. Players will first play as 9s, then 2b, and finally someone named A2. After three campaigns, players learn that humanity died out ages ago and the AI controlling the space station continues their legacy as if they were still human. Since players never see an actual person in space, they could have predicted this twist from the start, or at least assumed something was fishy.
Kingdom Hearts 2
RPG anagrams
For players who joined the interquel, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memorieswhich Roxas was in the beginning Kingdom Hearts 2 he was without thought. In the GBA spinoff, Sora faces Organization 13 for the first time, and every character has an X in their name, such as Axel, Marluxia, and Larxene. While players don't learn they are anagrams in the game, and their real names aren't revealed until later sequels, it's obvious that Roxas must be an anagram of Sora with an added X. The two characters are very similar, and the name is an easy puzzle to solve before it's revealed at the end of Roxas' opening act.
Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom
Missing link
Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom begins with Roland, who is assumed to be the president of some country, and sees an explosion before waking up in a fantasy world where he meets Prince Evan. Players who joined the first game know that there is usually an equivalent person in each world because they are like mirrors.
The biggest Korean RPG that can compete with any JRPG
How are KRPGs different from JRPGs?
Roland doesn't get to meet his two hours into the game, which is suspicious, plus a masked villain introduced somewhat early on named Doloran. He ended up being the world version of Roland, which was very obvious since it was another anagram situation with Doloran having an extra O.
Nature of People
Metaphor: ReFantazio takes place in a fantasy world where there are monstrous giants called humans who serve mostly as bosses in the game and are just as menacing as the humanoid Titans in the game. Attack on Titan. Turns out it wasn't a design choice to scare players with something familiar. Instead, these people were actually mutated and transformed people from ancient times, before the post-apocalypse, because this fantasy world used to be Earth. It might be a stretch, but some players might have figured it out, especially when they finished playing Attack on Titanwhich is eerily similar.
