Following the December 2025 update that allowed players to undertake custom missions, Grand Theft Auto Online and Rockstar Games took action against conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was killed in September 2025. On September 10, right-wing political activist and Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk was murdered during a public appearance at Utah Valley University (UVU). Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck by a bullet fired from a rifle. Authorities said the fatal shot was fired from a nearby rooftop during Kirk's performance at UVU. Kirk later succumbed to his injuries after being transported to Timpanagos Regional Hospital in Orem, Utah. The alleged shooter, Tyler Robinson, turned himself in after a day-long manhunt. Robinson is still awaiting trial. As a result of Kirk's murder, the CEOs of companies such as Valve and Reddit were summoned to a hearing on Capitol Hill at the request of the US House Oversight Committee in October 2025.

GTA Online has banned missions inspired by the death of Charlie Kirk
Although Kirk's death resulted in mixed reactions from the gaming industry, Rockstar Games began taking steps to remove all content related to his murder. GTA Onlineuser's servers. Rockstar's decision is not new
Rockstar Games isn't the only game developer to take action against user-generated content following Kirk's murder. In September 2025, Roblox began cracking down on content that referenced Charlie Kirk. More than 100 pieces of user-generated content were deleted Robloxservers after the hit. Roblox CEO David Baszucki said on social media that the removed content was infringing Roblox's Community Standards, which prohibit sensitive or violent real-world events from being re-enacted or celebrated in-game. Baszucki said he was “saddened” by Kirk's death.
Although Rockstar Games remains focused on Grand Theft Auto 6a development that hasn't stopped the gaming giant from enforcing and modifying its user-generated content policies for GTA Online.
