Overwatch 2 introduces the first new hero of 2026

Overwatch 2 recently released a short story video that strongly hinted that Anran might be coming to the game soon, and the leaked ultimate voice lines might just confirm that she is. Though there's been no official word on what the heroes will come up with Overwatch 2 furthermore, there is an extremely high chance that Anran will be among them.

For most Overwatch 2's life, three new heroes are added to the hero shooter every year. In 2025, these characters included Freja, Wuyang, and Vendetta, the latter of which had just arrived Overwatch 2 Season 20. As of now, the new heroes for 2026 are shrouded in mystery, but players can expect three more in Seasons 22, 24, and 26.

It's time to admit that Overwatch 2 is better than the first game and is a worthy sequel

As a long-time Overwatch player, I can finally admit that Overwatch 2 has surpassed the original game 4 years after its launch.

Overwatch 2 Hero 46 is probably Anran Ye

However, Overwatch 2 maybe they were just teasing who will be Hero 46 from Season 22. “The Invitation” is a new short story narrated by Winston voice actor Crispin Freeman Overwatch 2 recently released. The video focuses on his decision to send invites to Overwatch hopefuls – namely Wuyang and Anran Ye, two members of Wuxing University in China. The former is a water support hero dropped during Overwatch 2 Season 18, while the latter is his fiery older sister who appears in his backstory and movie trailer where she was also invited to join Overwatch alongside her brother. While both appear in the new art revealed in “The Invitation,” the camera focuses more on Anran than Wuyang, which immediately caught the attention of fans who believed it could be a teaser for the character's debut as a playable hero.

Not long after, a leak all but confirmed that those suspicions were almost certainly founded. Based on tips from Portaloverwatch, OverFire discovered new in-game voice lines from Echo in Overwatch 2 in which he says “Burn the sky!” in English and “Flaming feathers scorch the sky!” in Chinese, share them on Twitter. What's more, these voice lines are already appearing in several different locales, suggesting that Anran may be pretty far along in development.

This is far from the only teaser players have received for Anran Overwatch 2 also. In addition to being directly invited to join the organization in Wuyang's “Elemental Kin” movie trailer, she could also be seen in an official post shared last Christmas, in which Anran is the only character present in the art that is currently not playable.

It's important to note that this doesn't technically mean Anran is coming Overwatch 2 in season 22, or even later in 2026. It is possible that this evidence was misinterpreted, or that Anran could have arrived much later. However, with so much evidence mounting, it may be more surprising if Anran isn't added to the list soon than if it is.

What other heroes could be coming to Overwatch 2 in 2026?

As for the other heroes players can see, there are many different options that have been teased recently. Former Overwatch staffer Emre Sarioglu made a brief appearance in Freya's movie trailer and backstory comic, and Omnic executive Talon Maximilien has appeared suspiciously many times since late 2024. Additionally, a recent Easter egg on Busan hints at new activity from the MEKA Squad, which could mean one of D.Va could finally join her allies. Overwatch 2.

either way Overwatch 2 fans won't have to wait long for each other. A recent Weekly Recall blog suggested this Overwatch 2 has a busy schedule early this year, which means players can expect big news very soon. There are also four other empty seats Overwatch 2's in-game Story feature after “The Invitation”, so there will likely be more stories, movies or comics for players to enjoy in the near future.
