How to cook meals
The the earliest method of cooking food is the campfirewhich can be created from your inventory or Workbench of any level with four sticks and any scree. Bonfire allows you to cook basic mealssuch as cooked wild meat or roasted vegetables Wood, sticks or charcoal as fuel.
The upgrade to Campfire is the Chef's stovewhich is created on the desktop with two copper ingots, any ten tree trunks, and any six stones. When placing it unlocks a much larger variety of recipes from three categories: Prepared, Baked and Ingredients.
Until you get potions, eating food is the most effective way to restore your health. Most basic foods instantly restore your health by at least five percent and give you different buffs depending on foodsuch as Health Regen I or Stamina Regen I.
You can eat during battle and you can eat multiple foods at once to restore health, but the buffs they give do not stack. Time resets if it's the same buffor it will be overwritten by a stronger version.
Food is consumed by choice item from your hotbar and pressing Secondary Action button. It will take a seconds to eat foodand some actions may interrupt the meallike climbing a block or be hit by certain attacks.
What is the benefit of cooking meals?
Cooked food yes take more ingredients than the basic ones, but they will provide instant health regeneration than other types, which makes a lot of them more useful during combat if you run out of potions or have none at all, and they often do better buffs that last longer.

Every meal is good, but Skewers and salads are the cheapest cooked meals do and are the best food from the beginning of the game until you get access to the apple pie recipe and apples through the Apple Tree.
They provide a a combination of Health Regen II and Stamina Boost II or specifically Health Regen II and Health Boost II with Meat Skewers and all of that made from easy-to-grow ingredients.
