The Final Fantasy 7 remake saw a big uptick in platinum trophies

Late last month, Square Enix introduced “Streamlined Progression” for the PlayStation 5 and PC versions of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, giving all players access to an extremely losing feature set, including the ability to always hit for 9,999 damage or have HP and MP topped up at all times.

This, along with “Head Start Mode”, another feature that gave players an instant boost, made the FF7 Remake campaign fairly trivial and its Platinum trophy a byproduct.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Nintendo Switch 2 Review

Nintendo Switch 2 is the new best way to play Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is another excellent Nintendo Switch 2 port.

Shouldn't be a problem, right? More people experiencing the game is a good thing, and trophies are ultimately just virtual treats that have no real-world impact. Well, there is a fairly vocal community that has some disagreements.

On PSN profiles, where registered users can chart their Trophy progress, 17,755 have reached FF7 Remake's Platinum, including a number of users in recent days, including 50 between January 28th (Wednesday) and today (February 1st at 4pm).

This seemingly sparked a debate on the site's forum about the legitimacy of platinum after the “scams”.

“It weakens the hobby and (discourages) developers from making harder content when they notice that players aren't really participating in it,” wrote one of the wildest people against the update.

“I value the journey above all else, so I could never do something like that,” someone else wrote against the premise on Reddit.

The others were seemingly unfazed. After all, cheats don't invalidate existing Platinum owners.

“As someone who went platinum many years ago, I understand the anger,” wrote another. “But honestly, anything that makes games more accessible to a wider audience is a good thing, and someone using those features isn't going to devalue my own journey. I hope that comes to Rebirth. That's a game that I think scared some people off with its difficulty, and that's unfortunate.”

Trophies were broken long before FF7

With the existence of titles like My Name is Mayo, along with developers seemingly focused on easy trophies like Breakthrough Gaming, the idea that Final Fantasy 7 Remake broke the sanctity of Platinum is pretty ridiculous. That's not even counting games like Nier where you can “buy” Platinum, or Telltale titles that hand out trophies like candy.

They are digital collectibles at the end of the day. The fact that more people can potentially complete the game is awesome, and if Platinum happens to be that much easier, it's not that big of a deal. Especially when you still need all the other trophies!

Highguard failing shouldn't matter that much

Highguard has become the main theme of the game's art, instead of just a generic shooter that isn't as good as Apex Legends.
