10 Criminally Overlooked FPS Games That No One Is Talking About

Remember playing those first-person shooters decades ago?

For anyone who likes to look back in time, there are some great ones historical and fantasy first-person shooters out there They may bend the definition of “shooter set in the past,” but either way, the following games offer good variety for those tired of the same old, same old modern shooter.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops

Pay attention to the numbers

There are plenty of great ones out there Call of Duty games dealing with the past, but among the crowd, Call of Duty: Black Ops campaign is still the best option. The game largely follows Alex Mason as he reminisces about the events involving a CIA operation in Cuba that goes pretty much out of control.

While the point of many missions is to go quietly, this is by no means a stealth game. With tight controls, players will play one bombastic quest after another, all in the name of keeping the peace for America. At the end, players will also think about the nature of “Numbers”.

Medal Of Honor: Frontline

Attack on the beaches

There are a lot of interpretive twists in the movies about the attacks on the beaches of Normandy during WW2, but Medal of Honor: Frontline was one of the first to do this well in a video game. While not the most technically impressive game out there today, chaotic energy players can hit the beach with their brothers-in-arms and fight the Nazis is engrossing, along with the rest of the missions.

The shooting is pretty decent for a 2000s era game though Halo: Combat Evolved. To this day, the most impressive thing about it is the audio design, because with a good sound system or headphones, players will feel like they are in the heat of war in Europe. This is the place Medal of Honor climaxed.

Battlefield 1

Shovel soldier

There aren't many WW1 games because it's a tricky war to put together an entire game. Praise is due Battlefield 1 team for making it happen in a convincing way. Instead of focusing on trench warfare, the game showcases a lot of effort during “The Great War,” from driving tanks in the aforementioned trenches to flying planes and shooting down zeppelins to riding horses across the battlefield.

The shooting mechanics are smooth, but the real treat is shoveling enemies in close combat, as this is a novelty that few games allow (except Knight of Spades). It has a strong campaign and a solid multiplayer community that is still active today.

Wolfenstein: The New Order

Not on my watch

Wolfenstein: The New Order begins as a WWII shooter, franchise hero BJ Blazkowicz storms a Nazi stronghold to save the day. Unfortunately for everyone in this game, the Allies don't win the war. Instead, the globe bends the knee to the Nazi empire.

A Little Sister in BioShock (2007)

10 FPS games where they treat you like a killer

Kill or be killed for these FPS protagonists who aren't exactly the heroes and saviors you might think they are.

This alternate history game recreates the world if it were ruled by the Nazis, and it's creepy. Luckily, BJ wasn't done with them yet, and neither were his resistance buddies. It's an absurdly gory game with surprises and comedic bits. It can be a throwback as well as a modern shooter. It's a shame more games don't try to be as bold as Wolfenstein: The New Order.

BioShock

Somewhere across the sea

BioShock takes place in the 1960s, although it's hard to tell that players will be immersed in an underwater utopia throughout the campaign. Inside this fallen paradise, Rapture, players will have to fight the inhabitants to escape, and luckily they'll be armed to the teeth with pistols, submachine guns, and mystical powers transplanted through potions called plasmids.

These are plasmids and Big Daddy's cumbersome enemies BioShock is best known, along with the utterly haunting Rapture. It's a great shooter, and it's also one of the most atmospheric horror games of all time.

Time Splitter 2

Through The Eras

Time Splitter 2 begins in the future, but each mission sends the heroes back in time to a specific era. For example, the first mission is stealth-based and takes place at a Siberian base in 1990. Other time periods include a tour of Notre Dame in 1896 or Chicago in 1932, and each mission is different from the last.

Among the trilogy, Time Splitter 2 it stands out as the most inventive game in terms of weapons, gadgets, locations and actual surprises in the story. It's nice that all of them TimeSplitter games are available on various modern platforms.

Call Of Juarez: Gunslinger

The Evolving Western

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is a western shooter with as much rifle and revolver action as any John Wayne fan can handle. The best thing about the game is its story. It revolves around Silas, a bounty hunter who talks about his past job at a bar.

Emeline in The Outer Worlds 2 (2025)

10 FPS games with flexible builds and approaches

These shooters go beyond bullets and guns and give players tons of funky customization options.

As Silas tells his story, the players act out what he describes. Other bar patrons join in with corrections that don't seem to line up with the legends they've heard. When this happens, the level changes in various ways to match. Sometimes it will be topographical and other times it will change enemies. Either way, the gunslinging action and narrative make it a must-have.

Darkwatch

Vampires And Cowboys

Darkwatch is another western, but with a paranormal twist involving vampires. Players are newly turned vampire Jericho, aided by the titular Darkwatch, trying to stop the spread of the vampire disease. In addition to vampires, players will take down plenty of skeletal warriors and other demons using inventive supernatural-themed revolvers, crossbows, and more.

Jericho can also gain some abilities, and depending on good or bad decisions, his skill tree will vary. It's not the deepest shooter because the campaign is short, but the environment is top notch and there's simply no other FPS like it.

Uniqueness

The experiment went wrong

Uniqueness is a highly underrated 2010 shooter involving an incident that goes awry in Russia and causes a singularity event. Players are sent as a naval investigator, Captain Renko. When he enters the testing facility, he returns to 1955 before the incident occurs.

With the time device they acquire, players can alter the environment as they see fit. For example, they can restore a rusty staircase in the present to look like it did in the past. This time device can also be used in combat to slow down enemies, as one example. Uniqueness can be compared to an atmospheric horror film BioShockbut dry.
