I believe the best co-op survival horror game came out 21 years ago and still hasn't been beaten

Survival-horror games are traditionally single-player experiences, but several co-op horror games have also been released over the years. Resident Evil 5 and 6if you count them as survival-horror, they both feature co-op as a main feature, while the newer Outlast Trials he transitioned the franchise's unsettling first-person horror into co-op rather expertly. I've played pretty much every co-op survival-horror game released over the years, and in my opinion, none have topped the PlayStation 2's hidden gem from 2005. Obscure or its continuation, Obscure: The Aftermath.

Obscure it was released in Australia and Europe in 2004, but did not reach North America until 2005.

I rented Obscure on a whim from the movie gallery that day and was instantly hooked, playing it from start to finish with my brother in all its local co-op glory. Growing up, I was a big fan of the classics Resident Evil games and the idea that I could experience this style of survival-horror in co-op was mind-blowing at the time. It's a co-op horror experience that still hasn't been surpassed, and I honestly wish more people could experience it for themselves.

22 Best Co-op Zombie Games

The best co-op zombie games are the ones where players can enjoy hacking and slashing zombies together. Just make sure you're out of biting distance.

Obscure plays like old school Resident Evil game, but takes classic puzzle solving and exploration and sets it in a high school setting. ObscureAll playable characters are high school stereotypes and these stereotypes play a role in the game. For example, a stoner/criminal character can pick locks, while a jock has better agility and strength than other characters. Story and characters in Obscure they're not exactly the most complex, but they get the job done.

Obscure stands out due to its unique features

ObscureThe biggest highlight of the game is the incredibly fun local co-op mode, which allows two players to experience a classic-style horror adventure together. However, there are a few other reasons why the game stood out, such as the ability to combine items to create useful new tools and the looming threat of permadeath hanging over the characters. Characters who die Obscure they're dead forever, meaning fewer characters to work with as players work their way to the finale.

You can play both Obscure games on Steam

  • Obscure on Steam

  • Obscure: The Aftermath on Steam

Survival-horror fans are intrigued Obscure It should be noted that the game and its sequel were re-released on Steam about ten years ago. The Steam versions have earned “Very Positive” reviews and retail for $6.99 (original) and $9.99 (sequel). They appear to be faithful ports without many fancy bells and whistles added, so don't expect new features like online co-op, but the fantastic local co-op mode is still intact.

That's great Obscure and its sequel can be played on Steam, but I'd like to see these games ported to other platforms so more horror fans can discover them. It's a shame that neither game is playable on any modern gaming console and instead is stuck on much older hardware.

It's unlikely, but it would be even better if Obscure games can get remakes or remasters. Capcom has had incredible success with their series Resident Evil remakes, and while Obscure doesn't carry nearly the same weight, there are plenty of survival-horror fans who would jump at the chance to play a local co-op entry in the genre. A remaster or remake may also add online co-op, but local co-op is a must for Obscure to retain his identity.

There was no news on Obscure franchise in a few years, and fans shouldn't hold their breath for any developments. PC gamers can check out the games on Steam, and console players can keep their fingers crossed that classic horror games eventually make their way to modern systems.
