A new report claims it has long been rumored Assassin's Creed a multiplayer game that was in development was scrapped. Although there is still some hope for the future Assassin's Creed multiplayer projects, this news may come as a disappointment to those who expected modern AC a game with a multiplayer component.
Multiplayer was introduced Assassin's Creed franchise with Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood in 2010 and variations of it were offered in subsequent games such as Disclosure, Black flagand Unity. However, the franchise has gone without a competitive or co-op multiplayer mode for more than a decade, and now hopes to close another entry soon.
Beyond Good and Evil 2 director's statement after wave of Ubisoft cancellations
Beyond Good & Evil 2 survived the recent cancellation of the game by Ubisoft, and its creative director expressed both relief and sadness.
Assassin's Creed League shuts down
It was revealed that the upcoming Assassin's Creed a project that would have seen the four assassins team up in feudal Japan was scrapped. The report came via French website Origami, which claims to have verified the report with half a dozen Ubisoft employees. He was calling Assassin's Creed Leaguethe project was originally intended to serve as DLC for the latest entry, Assassin's Creed Shadowsand would even produce some of the content that would appear in season for the game. However, we go beyond simple DLC, Assassin's Creed League would create a new baseline for that future Assassin's Creed games would utilize and reintroduce multiplayer to future entries in the franchise.
In the end, it seems that the developer felt that the project was taking too long and was joining it Assassin's Creed Shadows wouldn't make much sense. However, the project wasn't completely canceled at that point, with plans to expand it as a small standalone multiplayer game that would likely use funds from Assassin's Creed Shadows. An alpha version of the multiplayer game was not expected to be available until May 2026. That has also now been cancelled, with the cancellation apparently coming as a surprise to Ubisoft Annecy executives who themselves only received the news a week before the news.
All is not necessarily lost for the future of Assassin's Creed multiplayer
Even if it means the end of the chance Assassin's Creed Shadows after receiving an official multiplayer mode, there is still little hope that the future of the series could ever see multiplayer again. Several team members who worked on the project reportedly saw their tasks changed to what was accomplished with the help of AC league project back into Ubisoft's proprietary Anvil game engine. This could open the door for an easier introduction of multiplayer in the future AC games and at least that means all the work that went into the project wasn't completely lost.

Fans Assassin's Creed franchises still have some hope they say Assassin's Creed Black Flag re-synceda remake of the original game is in the works. Although not confirmed by Ubisoft, the rumor has been around for some time and Ubisoft teased fans by confirming the rumors with a meme response on Twitter.
However, there has also been a lot of turbulence at Ubisoft recently. Many projects have been revealed that were canceled or otherwise terminated by Ubisoft this year. It was only in the first month of 2026 that Ubisoft was confirmed to have canceled Prince of Persia remake a Watch Dogs the games are apparently dead in the water, although the film adaptation of the franchise is still ongoing. Ubisoft also plans to close several game development studios under its roof over the next 3 years. At this point, would-be fans may want to take any rumors with a grain of salt, as even if they were true, there's no guarantee that the rumored games will actually make their way to gamers, as the gaming industry as a whole seems to continue to experience turbulent times after years of layoffs, shutdowns, and restructuring.
