Marvel Heroes is a fascinating and complex game to talk about because it was a constantly evolving free game. It can easily be compared Diablobut with Marvel characters and enemies instead of angels and demons. It was developed and released by Gazillion Entertainment for PC platforms in 2013 and has been constantly updated with new characters and story missions over the years. It was rebranded three times Marvel Heroes 2015, Marvel Heroes 2016and then Marvel Heroes Omega to coincide with the last build that finally came out on consoles for the first time. Unfortunately, it wasn't for long. PS4 and Xbox One fans got Marvel Heroes Omega on June 30, 2017, and then the servers were shut down along with the closure of Gazillion Entertainment on November 27, 2017. Thankfully, the fanservers still exist, but it's never been the same.
The game itself has been great for the past few days. New players could choose from a variety of free and paid heroes, including Spider-Man, Nova, Captain America, Blade, Ant-Man, Black Widow and more. Each character had a different skill path that suited their style, such as using Captain America's shield to bounce off enemies or Spider-Man's webbing to hold enemies in place. With friends online, players could team up and create their own team of Avengers heroes. Compared to other top-down action RPGs such as X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypseenvironment in Marvel Heroes they were much bigger and gave players more room to breathe, especially in multiplayer. The only reason it's ranked “down” is because it's no longer officially playable without fanservers.

In terms of production value, Marvel's Avengers is the best looking Marvel RPG ever made. It just stumbled a bit with its live service model and wasn't fully RPG. It can be compared more like an action-adventure and contains RPG elements such as costumes, equipment, skills and leveling up. The game follows an Avengers celebration day where superfan Kamala Khan attends and witnesses the disaster that kills Captain America. With the superheroes now on the run due to the new edict, the world is in turmoil. That's when Kamala runs into Bruce Banner and the two basically go on a road trip to help the Avengers reunite. Also, this might be a spoiler, but it's obvious because Captain America is playable in the game: he didn't die. The initial roster of heroes included Kamala as Ms. Marvel, Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, and Iron Man.

In the campaign, players will be locked into certain characters during missions, usually Kamala. It's about as exciting and well-told as other action-adventure games of its era, like Uncharted and Marvel's Spider-Man. The story and dubbing are definitely the biggest strengths Marvel's Avengerswith talents like Nolan North, Troy Baker and Laura Bailey. The characters also handled well in combat. Iron Man's flight abilities are awesome, Black Widow's spy tech offered good stealth gameplay, and smashing enemies as the Hulk was just a blast. Other characters were later added along with new stories, including Kate Bishop, Hawkeye, Black Panther, Jane Foster, Spider-Man, and the Winter Soldier. The only thing that tripped the game up was the mission structure. It could happen again because there wasn't much content at launch and post-launch content was released too far apart. It was the narrow scope that helped the game focus on its story, which was both good and bad.

Marvel's Midnight Sun is undoubtedly the most RPG-like Marvel game of the entire list. Players can create their character, The Hunter, who is fully voiced as a male or female hero and is tasked with establishing a secret society of Marvel heroes to put an end to the evil witch Lilith, who is corrupting other heroes and villains. Players build their team of heroes from both obscure and well-known Marvel characters, including Doctor Strange, Blade, Magik, Ghost Rider and more. Similar to other Firaxis games, Marvel's Midnight Sun is a strategy game. In this case, character actions are dictated by cards that can account for their movement and actions during their turn.
The maps are usually smaller than those of other strategy games, making them a bit of a breeze to complete. Between missions, players can hang out in The Abbey, their hideout, conversing with and learning more about other characters. Story choices play a role in the game as well, so when it comes to customization options, Marvel's Midnight Sun wins. The game's charm definitely comes from learning about the characters' quirks, such as Blade's love of movies, and while the camaraderie between The Hunter and other Marvel heroes doesn't compare to similar strategy games like Fire Emblem: Three Housesthe overall package is interesting and entertaining.

Unlike the previous two Marvel action RPGs from Raven Software, X-Men Legends and X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance cast a wide net to get more players. In 2006, Marvel fans could purchase the GBA, PC, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, Xbox, and Xbox 360 versions of the game, and in 2016, it was remastered for PS4 and Xbox One. The main console versions started with a four-man team of Captain America, Thor, Spider-Man and Wolverine going after Doctor Doom in his castle. Like any good Marvel story, the game evolved from there, allowing players to explore famous locations such as Atlantis, Asgard, Stark Tower, and the Sanctum Sanctorum. Deadpool, Human Torch, Ghost Rider, Daredevil, Nicky Fury and many more were added to the playable roster over the course of the campaign.

These games may not boast the kind of spectacle you'll see in the big-budget MCU movies, but they certainly have great writing and characters.
In missions, players always had a choice of which four characters they wanted to take with them, with the exception of co-op, as each could choose their own hero. at that time Marvel: Ultimate Alliance was a new way to bring some of the best heroes and villains together in one epic RPG that made sense in the Marvel universe. With the MCU movies coming, this game probably wouldn't be as exciting if it came out today because crossovers happen all the time. The cutscenes also lack the production value of anything like that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthbut Marvel fans will get a lot out of this game's story regardless. In addition, remastered versions help to do Marvel: Ultimate Alliance more accessible compared to some of the other games, or at least accessible to those who bought it between 2016 and July 2018, since that's when its sequel was also pulled.

X-Men Legends 2: Rise Of Apocalypse

There are two really cool ones X-Men games from the PS2 era: X-Men Legends and X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse. X-Men Legends set the tone with a dungeon crawler that allows players to take four X-Men heroes on missions. Everyone levels up over time. The plot was a typical good versus evil battle, with Magneto once again trying to take over before the X-Men rolled into town to take care of business. It was a good top-down action RPG, but X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse is better on several fronts. The game adapts the Apocalypse storyline from the comics, bringing together Magneto's team and the X-Men in a united effort to stop him from destroying everything.
The first game offered four-player local co-op only across all platforms, but X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse added online support. It's still a better couch co-op game, but the option to play online is here. The diverse cast of characters is better than the first game as there are villains to play like Magneto, Juggernaut and many more. Once players find their favorite four X-Men, they can play as each other to maximize their levels or switch them on a mission-by-mission basis. Overall, it's a very dense story that doesn't move the player, but the combat action and diverse cast of X-Men characters is more than enough for the location. X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse at the top of the list.
