You can get the essence by clearing the Energy Aluvium encounter. Enemies that appear here have a chance to drop essence, but once you increase your exploration level, you'll unlock the Severe Energy Aluvium encounter, which allows you to spend sanity and get guaranteed high-rare Essence drops. Think of them as the standard Relic/Artifact style gear system in other Gacha games.

What sets Essences apart from gear in other games is that they don't exactly provide the usual assortment of stats like ATK or Crit RATE. Instead, they enhance weapon perks, including your weapon's characteristics.

Essences drop with random perks, but you can shave off some of the RNG with pre-etch stats. To do this, interact with any Severe Energy Aluvium rift, then select the Pre-Engrave button directly above the Start button at the bottom right of the screen. This will open a window where you can select the stats you want your essences to potentially have.

You must choose three different attribute stats and either a secondary or a skill stat. Any essence you get from an encounter will have one of three selected attribute stats, a secondary/skill stat of your choice, and one final perk that is completely random.

Equipping an essence increases your weapon's perk levels by a set amount. Think of it as upgrading your weapon's potential, except you can upgrade all three weapon perks at the same time.

How to equip Essence:

  1. Open the character screen and select an operator.

  2. Click on the Weapons tab.

  3. Click the Essence button next to the Potential button.

  4. Select the Essence you want to equip.

You will notice that your essences have various benefits such as Attack Boost, Arts DMG Boost, Flow, Twilight and so on. When you equip an Essence, all of its benefits are transferred to the weapon equipped by your operator, increasing their value by whatever is on the Essence itself. This will not add any additional benefits to your weapons. The essence will only strengthen the existing ones.

Ideally, the essences you have should increase all available perks on your weapon, but there are exceptions. You'll have to do the math yourself and see if it's worth it to prioritize one Essence over the other.
