5 Companions Who Were Way More Annoying Than You Remember

original Pokemon anime is popular for many reasons, one element being the cast. Ash Ketchum and his Pikachu are some of the most famous anime heroes and they meet all sorts of trainers along their journey. Many of these people, trainers or otherwise, would also travel with Ash and become his lifelong friends.

However, there were some traveling companions, whether they were around for most of the season or only traveled with Ash for a little while, that weren't as beloved as other characters. In fact, although these characters are good-natured, they can often be irritating. Some of these characters lose those annoying streaks, though unfortunately that's not always the case.

Brock's Sudowoodo could be sticky like Bonsly

The rock type became much calmer after development

Bonsly, a small Pokémon introduced in Generation IV, is not actually a Grass-type. The Bonsai Pokémon is a mischievous rock-type with a plant-like appearance. However, if someone tries to pour water on this “tree”, it will run away. After evolving, Bonsly transforms into Sudowoodo, an imitation Pokémon. Sudowoodo does not like to fight, so he tries to look as much like a tree as possible to avoid battle.

In the Kanto region, Brock finds Bonsly all alone, crying because he is hungry and no one was around to take care of him. Brock thus took over the role of Bonsly's caretaker, even being his only companion after arriving in Sinnoh. As a child, Bonsly was very needy and often cried, although her clingy behavior could be stressful at times. Thankfully, the Rock-type loosened up a lot more as it evolved and even behaved like an older sibling to Brock's Happins.

Many fans criticize Chloe's overall lack of character development

Chloe began to gain confidence thanks to Eevee

Like Serena and May before her, Chloe was introduced as someone unsure of what she wanted to do in life. However, unlike her predecessors, Chloe initially only tried to have a realistic mindset, causing her to come across as aloof or even cold. It also turns out that Chloe wasn't particularly fond of Pokemon in the past. In fact, she was even unkind to her family's Yamper when he was first adopted, though Chloe regretted those actions after the dog Pokémon escaped.

Chloe began to break out of her shell for good thanks to Eevee, which left the Pokemon researchers confused as she did not evolve. With Eevee by her side as her Pokémon partner, Chloe was able to become a true trainer and even began a career as a Pokémon Performer. Overall, Chloe has received mixed reviews among fans, with many finding it irritating that she didn't get much character development. Although her personality at the beginning of her debut was rather frustrating, Chloe later became a much more relaxed and friendly person.

Max can be quite knowledgeable

Mayo's brother often criticizes coaches despite not being one

Unlike his sister, who once felt immense pressure from others to become a coach like their father, Max dreams of the day he can begin his coaching journey. To prepare for the day when he is old enough to become a trainer, Max spends a lot of time reading everything he can find about Pokémon. Thanks to his book smarts, Max knows a lot about Pokémon and battle tactics, albeit only in theory instead of actual practice. He gets a chance to learn more about Pokemon thanks to May, who takes care of him during their adventure instead of their parents.

Max is a good-hearted boy, but unfortunately he can be quite snobbish about what he has learned. In fact, he'll even criticize Ash for his decisions during the battle even though Max hasn't become a trainer yet. Despite this behavior, Max genuinely looks up to Ash and is one of his sister's biggest supporters. Brock even acted as a sort of mentor to Max, teaching him more about the real world experience with Pokémon.

Barry always rushes into everything

This rival character is legendary for his impatience

IN Pokémon Diamond, Pokémon Pearland Pokemon Platinumthe player character is quickly introduced to the rowdy boy next door who dreams of becoming a coach. That boy is Barry, the player character's future rival, who is often noticed by non-player characters to be impatient and unable to sit still. One of Barry's famous sayings is that he will “fine” someone if they arrive at their next destination later than him. Part of why he wants to become a trainer so badly is because of his father, Palmer, one of the Frontier Brains of Sinnoh.

As seen in the anime, Barry retains the same personality he has in the games, although he is somehow even more hyperactive. The energetic young Trainer is not only one of Ash's rivals in the Sinnoh region, but as seen briefly, he is a minor traveling companion. However, Barry's anime counterpart is even more impatient and short-tempered, easily upset over the smallest of things. His behavior can be so out of order that his Pokémon partner, Empoleon, often shows up to the embarrassment of his trainer.

Goh doesn't consider the importance of friendship with Pokémon

A coach who cares more about catching than training

Often considered a characteristic by fans and critics alike Pokémon GOPokémon Trainer Goh appears as a secondary protagonist Pokémon Journeys: The Series. While Ash dreams of becoming a Pokémon master, Goh's dreams focus less on his experience as a fighter and more on what Pokémon he is able to catch. In fact, Goh dreams of catching all the known Pokémon in the world. His big dream, besides completing the National Pokédex, is to catch the Mythical Pokémon Mew and become its Pokémon partner.

While completing the National Pokédex is an incredible goal, Goh overlooks the importance of becoming better friends with the Pokémon he catches. In fact, he's so adamant about catching Mew first that he hurts the feelings of Scorbunny, who wanted to be his first Pokémon partner. Although Goh later agreed to this, Cinderace, along with several other Pokémon, were the only members of his large roster that Goh took the time to get to know. In comparison, Ash, who didn't focus so much on completing his Pokédex, instead took the time to get to know each Pokémon he caught, earning the trainer's respect from fans and other characters.
