Sony's recent State of Play left gamers with plenty of exciting things to unpack, and one of the biggest surprises of the event was God of War: Sons of Sparta. Not only are they God of War Fans will get a canon 2D prequel starring a young Kratos, but it also immediately cast a shadow over the PS5. God of War: Sons of Sparta he was definitely the top of the game, and he wasn't the only one God of War either notification.
After a lot of rumors and speculations, it has finally been confirmed that a God of War a remake of the trilogy is in the works. This is great news for longtime fans of the series. It will be fascinating to see how the developers handle remaking Kratos' original journey. As exciting as this news is, there is one big catch. According to Sony's official announcement on the PlayStation blog, the trilogy remake is “still very early in development.” This is really surprising because it has been rumored for so long. So, though God of War: Sons of Sparta the shadow casting is amazing, it shouldn't distract from the strange decision to only start developing the remake trilogy now.
The remake of the God of War trilogy has been anticipated for years – so why wait until now?
As of 2024, there have been several rumors and leaks claiming that a God of War a remake of the trilogy was in development. Of course, all rumors should be taken with a grain of salt. If anything, Sony's announcement is a good reminder of how inaccurate some of these leaks and rumors can be. With Sony stressing that a remake is “very soon” in development, it sounds like the wait for more God of War the games will be much longer than expected.

Sony has confirmed that “it will be a while before anything else can be shared,” so there's no telling when God of War fans will get more news about the remake of the trilogy. God of WarFuture plans have been one of the biggest mysteries in the industry. The one-two punch of the remake trilogy and God of War: Sons of Sparta is a solid update, but the first one is probably as frustrating as it is promising, as it could mean waiting for RagnarokSequels may now take longer than expected.
While rumors of a remake of the trilogy seemed to have moved on from development, it's possible that these leaks captured Santa Monica Studio's plans when it was only in the conceptual stages. There is no way to know for sure. Regardless, it's really shocking that a remake of the trilogy is in production so soon after being rumored for so long. While it's obviously great that this is happening, it's unfortunate that it took so long to get the ball rolling. The ideal scenario would see the trilogy release earlier so that Santa Monica could go all-in Ragnarok's successor and an announcement like this would have made more sense for the big 20th anniversary last year. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.
On another note, original Kratos voice actor TC Carson returned to announce. It is unclear whether he will be recording new voice lines for the remake trilogy or simply re-recording existing dialogue.
The next major God of War game series is becoming more mysterious as time goes on
It will be four years in November 2026 God of War Ragnarok he was released. Between God of WarFirst chapter in Norwegian and Ragnarok's opening, there were four years. As game development becomes more complicated, it seemed likely that there would be a gap between the two Ragnarok and its sequel would be bigger, especially since the next game will probably need a completely new environment and technology. Nothing is impossible, but the remake trilogy being so far away makes me anxious to wait for the next one God of War the game will take much longer than originally expected. I'm crossing my fingers that it won't be, but the news about the remake definitely prepared me for a painfully long wait.
Rumors of another God of War game
-
There are theories that it could be set in Egypt.
-
Atreus could take up Kratos' mantle.
-
The split could see Kratos rebuild Greece while Atreus explores the new environment.
Santa Monica Studios has done an incredible job of keeping things tight-lipped about what happens next with Kratos and Atreus. AND God of War a game set in Egypt would definitely be an exciting change of scenery. Ragnarok it felt like the end of the Norse saga, but the writers could have some surprises in store to keep Kratos in the realm. Kratos and Atreus' paths diverge now, so there's even a chance for more God of War the story could be divided between two spheres.
In the meantime, at least there's a great new God of War prequel to dive into and a show on the Horizon
God of War: Sons of Sparta isn't the new chapter some were hoping for, but it's a fascinating look into Kratos' younger life. Sony has made it clear that it is unclear when more God of War remake trilogy or major news will be ready, but at least there is fresh gameplay and story to help pass the time.
Amazon Live Action God of War the series is interesting but nerve wracking. Turning video games into live-action shows is no easy task. There's also an argument that it's unnecessary when it comes to games that are heavily story-driven God of War and The last of us. Fallout proved that a live-action series can work incredibly well, but that's also because Bethesda's RPG series has the advantage of being more lore-focused than actual story. The world itself makes it easy to build a compelling original narrative.
God of WarThe confirmed cast includes Ryan Hurst, Callum Vinson, Alastair Duncan, Mandy Patinkin, Olafur Darri Olafsson, Danny Woodburn, Jeff Gulka, Max Parker and Teresa Palmer.
In addition God of War franchise, the new Santa Monica Studio IP is also still in the works. It's safe to say that the developer is currently busy with projects. As exciting as this is, let's hope it doesn't mean Santa Monica Studio is taking on too much responsibility. Stretching a studio too thin can be incredibly risky. However, Santa Monica Studio's strong results are at least a good sign that the company knows what it's doing. Right now, everyone God of War fans can do at this time is check out God of War: Sons of Sparta and wait to see what Sony and Santa Monica Studio announce next.
