Updated February 14, 2026 by Marco Santos: During the initial Early Access version of Hytale, players were unable to fully tame the horses. After a game update, this feature has now been implemented into the game and allows players to fully tame horses by giving them food; they will no longer try to escape.
Where to find horses in Hytale
Horses are usually found somewhere in grassland biomeswhich are areas mostly covered with quiet hills and pastures. While exploring these biomes for materials, you'll often come across horses minding their own business, but you'll need to be careful if you want to ride one. The horses will run away the moment they see you, so try to sneak behind them.
When you are near a horse, you can mount it by pressing the F key. You don't need any saddles or feed the horse if you want to ride it. Just get close to them, press F, and then take off. However, this doesn't necessarily make them friendly towards you, and they may run away as soon as you dismount.
Players can also tame other animals such as chickens, sheep, moss horns and cows. Camels can be tamed and used as mounts, just like horses.

If you don't want to scare the horse, take the carrot with you. As long as you have a carrot in your hand, every adult horse in your general vicinity will come to you of their own accord. Previously, the moment you hold any other item Hytalany nearby horse will run away, but as of update 3 horses no longer run away when you give them a carrot.
You can find carrots randomly in the wild. Alternatively, you can plant some carrots of your own. Carrot seeds can be made at the farm workbench using 3 life essences.
If you feed the horses carrots, they will become permanently friendly to you. They won't try to run away once you put the carrot down and will happily stay in your base if you leave them there. If you plan to keep a horse, consider building a suitable shelter for it, as roaming enemies might try to attack it.
