Larian released a surprise patch for Baldur's Gate 3 yesterday, but players have been reporting performance issues and in some cases losing entire saves after the update. The 200MB patch was aimed at improving VRAM consumption on PC, optimization on Mac and Steam Deck, and stability and crash prevention on consoles. However, this seems to have caused a few problems.
Several players on various platforms have reported performance issues, with frames dropping significantly after the update. Some have even seen their saves go bad. While the update was aimed at fixing a few remaining issues, it seems that many players have started facing issues that weren't there before.
Yesterday's patch is causing problems in BG3
“After the fix, my game progress (241 hours) is no longer playable,” said a post on the Steam community forum. “What a success Larian. Now I have to check all my files again and again. So far I've played 241 hours with only one crash and the game loads every time without a problem.” Several other comments also noted that their save was no longer available.
Elsewhere, players have complained of stuttering and sudden frame drops. “The new hotfix dropped my stable 60-75 FPS experience to 18-25,” said another Steam forum post. “I'm heartbroken. First act, nothing intense and just a swinging middle setting.”
Baldur's Gate 3 will be a video game adaptation that breaks Owlbear's Back
After making his mark with The Last of Us, Craig Mazin is shifting his focus to a new take on Larian's beloved RPG.
Even on Reddit, fans reported performance issues. “For the first time since I bought this game I'm having bad performance. Yesterday I was hitting a crisp 60fps with occasional drops to 45-50 when loading new areas,” said one player. “Though now I'm at 10 fps when standing still and drop to 5 or less when moving.”
Hopefully, Larian will work to fix these issues as soon as possible. I can't imagine what it must feel like to lose an entire playthrough of Baldur's Gate 3.
