God of War Sons of Sparta is new God of War a game that many fans did not expect. There have been rumors of a 2D Metroidvania in the past God of War and Sony's latest State of Play proved that this was indeed true. Regardless of the rumours, God of War Sons of Sparta was still a big surprise to many players. What surprised me the most was that a shadow lay casually on him. I love a good drop of shade, even so God of War Sons of Sparta isn't my ideal way to experience Kratos' story, it's a fun Metroidvania that expands on the franchise's lore. So things could definitely be worse.
The God of War the franchise has been incredibly silent ever since Ragnarok'with Valhalla DLC. In addition to live action God of War show, which is produced by Amazon, the future of the series has been a complete mystery. Fortunately, the game state preview cleared some things up. Sons of Sparta offers a glimpse into Kratos' teenage years, but that wasn't the only big reveal. The God of War the remake trilogy will also become a reality, just a little further. There is still no word on the next main line God of War game but Sons of Sparta proved to be a solid way to mix up the series. Playing as a teenage Kratos honestly took some getting used to, but it was also compelling to see the relationship between him and his brother Deimos in a new light. But this duo has one big drawback. Deimos is a pretty useless companion.
5 God of War games with the best combat, ranked
While storytelling has taken center stage in recent years, the God of War franchise has always been about combat at its core.
God of War: Sons of Sparta has the opposite companion problem to Ragnarok
Overall, Ragnarok was a fantastic entry into God of War series. Kratos grew into an even stronger father and overall person, and Atreus began to forge his own path that often separated the father-son duo. However, this did not stop Atreus from helping Kratos on missions. Frankly, he helped too often. IN God of War 2018, Atreus' annoying attitude after finding out he was a god was important to the story. He eventually grew out of his arrogance, making him a more layered character. He can still be annoying though Raganarokjust for a completely different reason. Kratos' son may not be that overbearing, but he definitely helps a little too much with the puzzles. Atreya's constant advice for God of War Ragnarok's puzzles frustrated fans so much that the Santa Monica studio eventually had to offer a solution.

Atreus and other companions prove to be too useful in God of War Ragnarok
When God of War Ragnarok dropped on PC, the developers included an extra upgrade for players. A new option called “Reduced Puzzle Hints” has been added to the game, which makes companions like Atreus, Freya, and Mimir much less cheerful when solving obstacles. RagnarokThe characters are great, but their eagerness to help Kratos get from A to B can be downright infuriating at times. They were just doing too much, so “Reduced Puzzle Hints” was a welcome inclusion. It doesn't make companions completely silent, but it's a small change that makes a huge difference.
Atreus might be too useful, but Sons of Sparta's Deimos isn't really useful at all
Don't get me wrong. I like that Deimos is there Sons of Sparta. Kratos' relationship with his brother is fascinating down the road, but a lot of the game left me wondering where Deimos was or why he wasn't helping. Deimos in Sons of Sparta is a bittersweet version of the character because it shows what he was like before he was tortured by Thanatos for years. He is a headstrong Spartan with a good heart who wants to do what is right. So why is it just standing there?
For the most part, Deimos either does nothing to help or is nowhere to be found until checkpoints and cutscenes bring him back into existence. At the end of the Ioke boss fight near the beginning of the game, Deimos saves Kratos from certain death in a scripted sequence, but he's not really useful as an actual companion. For example in Sons of SpartaThe Alastor boss fight, Deimos slashes and slashes where he can, but it's nothing major. His presence in combat doesn't feel as game-changing as Atreus. It just feels like he's going through the motions. Sometimes he'll even find himself at the opposite end of a boss stage, slashing at nothing while Kratos fights for his life. Personally, I would rather have no companion at all than the illusion of one.
Despite his shortcomings as a companion, Deimos at least adds another to the Sons of Sparta story
Deimos may not be the most helpful brother, but it's great to see a glimpse of what life was like for him and Kratos before everything fell apart. As optimistic and sentimental as some of them Sons of SpartaMoments can be, it's hard to ignore the tragedy that's on the way. Each God of War the game expanded Kratos' lore and Sons of Sparta may be one of the most bittersweet records.
Sons of Sparta is a brief antidote to the growing desire for God of War
Not everyone God of War fan will associate with Metroidvania, but it's a solid chapter in Krat's life. Sons of Sparta certainly isn't reinventing the wheel when it comes to Metroidvanias, but that doesn't stop it from being a strong take on the genre. Sons of SpartaThe young version of Kratos takes some getting used to. Seeing the dynamic between him and Deimos as the story unfolds is worth it.
Until the next main one God of War the game is announced Sons of Sparta is a fresh adaptation that may help retain fans. The story is interesting and the game has classic Metroidvania qualities that are fun God of War universe. When it comes to fighting, Kratos is on his own.
