Watch Dogs Legion Director's Cut reportedly in development

Last month it was announced that the Watch Dogs series was being put on ice, to which renowned leaker Shinobi602 replied: “Not really.” There was much speculation as to what he meant, but the answer may not have been all that exciting.

According to Insider Gaming editor-in-chief Tom Henderson, plans are in motion for a director's cut of Watch Dogs Legion, described as a “remaster” of sorts.

Watch Dogs Legion Director's Cut Reportedly Has Night Mode, New Mocap, and More

“Now I found out that there is some work being done on the Watch Dogs franchise that ties into Watch Dogs Legion. Almost like a director's cut in a way,” Henderson explained on the Insider Gaming podcast. “I don't know why they're doing this. There will be some new content. I heard they might do a full night mode version of the game or something. I heard this – don't shoot the messenger.”

“They're making a new mocap for it,” he continued. “I think it's a new thing from Ubisoft, they're trying to do director's cuts and remakes of games they've already made. Like remasters in a sense, right? They're just kind of doing the low-hanging fruit until they get together with the rest of the company.”

Understandably, there is a lot of confusion as to why Ubisoft would go back to what is widely considered to be the worst entry in the series instead of remastering the original two games. In all likelihood, the director's cut will be released to coincide with the upcoming film adaptation, and Ubisoft simply chose the latest version because it would require the least work to update, even though Legion is hardly the best representation of the series.

As for when we can expect Ubisoft to “start pulling back the curtain on all these games,” Insider Gaming executive editor Mike Straw predicts we'll hear “a lot” about them before the next investor call in May. “That's when they'll have an update on how things are going because they'll have to have an annual forecast for their 2027 fiscal year,” he said.
