The main types in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen are the classic ones (from Gen 1): Normal, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Fighting, Poison, Country, Flying, Mental, Bug, Rock, Spirit, Dragonplus added Dark and Steel (from Gen 2).

Typing in Gen 1 games is associated with special damage or physical damage, so there are two large groups of damage by type:

  • Physical damage (use Atk to calculate damage): Normal, Fighting, Rock, Earth, Steel, Flying, Spirit, Bug, Poison
  • Special damage (use Sp. Atk. to calculate damage): Fire, Grass, Water, Electric, Ice, Psychic, Dragon, Dark

As for interactions between types, here is a complete type diagram to calculate damage based on a few simple assumptions: ½ (half damage), 2 (super effective), 0 (no effect). In the left column players will find attackers, in the top row their corresponding interactions with defenders and how much damage they deal.

As players may have already noticed, not all Pokemon types are available in FireRed & LeafGreen games, which are considered Gen III, as they have all the types and tricks included in Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald.

Most types in FireRed & LeafGreen are available with the only exception being the Fairy type. For example Clefairy, Jigglypuff and their evolutions are still normal type.

However, they do exist Steel & Dark type movesand even some Gen 2 and 3 Pokémon included in the games. So Murkrow, Skarmory and Scizor are good examples of this. Although they can only be caught by getting the National Pokedex in the game.
