A week ago, we were all left in awe as Resident Evil Requiem marched to a staggering 344,214 concurrent players on Steam, becoming the most played Resident Evil title on Steam and in the top 10 most played primarily single player titles ever on the platform.
A week later, Slay the Spire 2, the sequel to the extremely popular rougelike title, said hold my beer. That's because after only releasing on March 5th, the same date as Marathon, the indie title became the 20th most played title by the highest concurrent players on Steam… ever.
Yes, you read that right.
With a whopping 526,793 concurrent players, all of which came over 10 hours ago as of this writing, Slay the Spire 2 is the 20th most played title on the platform. Its peak surpassed several other record-breaking titles, including Arc Raiders, as well as the aforementioned Resident Evil Requiem.
Steam Deck is the first of many video game RAM shortage tragedies
Valve's handheld is currently sold out due to lack of RAM and memory.
It is extremely important to note that this is an Early Access title, which means that the final product has not been delivered. But that didn't stop players from showing up in droves to play the game.
At $24.99 per title, assuming all prices stay relatively the same across regions, that's over $12 million for the Mega Crit developer. Again – and we can't stress this enough – the game is only 48 hours old.
Marathon, meanwhile, has yet to reach its original peak
That Slay the Spire 2 was able to double the number of concurrent players it had after its release is pretty amazing. Because on the other side of the coin, Marathon hasn't even matched the 88,387 it peaked with on PC.
Marathon currently has 73,045 players, which is no small number. Its 24-hour peak is 78,498. However, both of those numbers are just under 10,000 players down from 88,337 players, at least on Steam.
Originally, Mega Crit had some funny words for Bungie on social media after it became increasingly apparent that Slay the Spire 2 was more popular than Marathon. However, those stings happened to 177,181 players who engaged in Slay the Spire 2, compared to the aforementioned 88,337 for Marathon.
It's unlikely anyone could have predicted that Slay the Spire 2 would continue to add hundreds of thousands to that tally to march on the half-million mark and enter some rarefied Steam territory. But that's exactly what happened. Momentum is a serious thing, and Slay the Spire 2 has it in spades.
