This article was updated by Andrea Tram on March 9, 2026 with information from the new Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer. It was first published on March 6.

Today's Nintendo Direct officially revealed a new trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, including action scenes involving Bowser Jr. and announcing who voices Yoshi. The actor chosen for the role is Donald Glover, who shocked the Mario community online, though fans are praising him for his handling of the role. Honey Queen is also confirmed to be in the film, voiced by Issa Rae, as is Wart, voiced by Luis Guzman.

The original story is as follows:

New Nintendo Direct was officially announced on March 9, although it carries a big catch: it will be exclusively focused on Super Mario Galaxy Movie. However, Nintendo's records indicate that one of the company's general demos may also take place in the near future.

Super Mario Bros. Movie premiered in April 2023 to historic success, becoming the fourth highest-grossing animated film of all time. Nintendo formally confirmed that a sequel is in the works in March 2024. The project was revealed as Super Mario Galaxy Movie the following year and even received a dedicated Nintendo Direct in November 2025.

Starting in early 2026, Nintendo Partner Showcase Direct and Indie World will host broadcasts as well as broadcasts focused on Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. This is in addition to the usual February 27 Pokémon Presents and soon two Directi focused on Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Meanwhile, almost nothing is known about Nintendo's own first-party game plan for the coming months. The most recent Universal Nintendo Direct took place in September 2025 and brought announcements focused on more than half a dozen games, including Pokemon Pokopiawhich was just released worldwide on March 5th. WITH Pokemon Pokopia is officially out, Nintendo only has one remaining first-party game with a confirmed release date –Tomodachi Life: Living the Dreamwhich is scheduled to launch on April 16.

Given these circumstances, there is a likely chance that the next Nintendo Direct will take place in the near future. September has historically been the most reliable window for a universal Nintendo Direct. Outside of this anchor slot, the company often used February and June for its larger showcases, while March and April appearances were relatively rare and usually involved disruptions to its usual schedule. With Nintendo's currently confirmed release schedule actually ending on April 16, the company may have reason to provide an earlier update rather than waiting until June 2026 to outline its next slate of titles.

  • Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave

  • Rhythm Heaven Groove

  • Splatoon Raiders

  • Yoshi and the mysterious book

Looking at the current list of announced Switch 2 titles, it seems that several projects are likely to appear in the next Nintendo Direct, whenever it happens. Chief among them is Nintendo's puzzle platformer Yoshi and the mysterious bookwhich was introduced in September 2025 with a release window of Spring 2026. The game follows Yoshi as he explores a magical encyclopedia, befriending many creatures and using their abilities to solve puzzles and navigate through a series of traversal challenges.

Three other Switch 2 titles are also broadly targeted for a 2026 launch: Rhythm Heaven Groove, Splatoon Raidersand Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave. Since none of them have a firm launch date yet, each is a plausible candidate for the next general Nintendo Direct. As regards Super Mario Galaxy Moviethe film is set to hit the silver screens on April 1, 2026. Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser) and Keegan-Michael Key (Toad) will reprise their roles from Super Mario Bros. Movie.
