Resident Evil Requiem is well on its way to becoming one of, if not the most successful Resident Evil game of all time. It scored a staggering number of players on Steam, the best review score in the series, and sold over five million copies in a matter of days.
To celebrate, the game's director, Koshi Nakanishi, released a heartfelt message to fans, teasing the game's future, which included DLC, a photo mode, a minigame, and a “surprise” coming in May.
The story of Resident Evil Requiem is just beginning
Nakanishi's message began by thanking fans for their support of the five-million-selling title, before diving into what the future holds.
In addition to promising to continue to fix any bugs and performance issues the game may encounter, Nakanishi shared that a “highly requested” photo mode is coming, along with another surprise “coming around May.”
Hoping to live up to Requiem's enthusiastic reception, Nakanishi also shared that the team planned to add a minigame, which he may or may not have teased in the video.
During a small skit where he drops some memes, the player character is shown sitting across from Victor Gideon playing a Resident Evil themed card game. Of course, this could just be another meme image in a sea of them, but it's interesting to consider, and given the popularity of similar minigames in titles like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, it's not out of the realm of possibility.
The big news from the video, however, was the confirmation of the heavily rumored Requiem story expansion. The story “will delve deeper into the world of Requiem,” and is currently in development, though Nakanishi hints that the content may still be a little ways off, saying, “We're working hard on it now. It's going to take some time, so we ask for your patience.”
So, what could it be?
The Resident Evil franchise is no stranger to DLC. Resident Evil Village added the Shadows of Rose DLC, which focused on Ethan's daughter, along with a third-person mode. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Gets Banned Footage Vol. 1 and 2, End of Zoe and Not a Hero, and Resident Evil 4 received additional Separate Ways content. Requiem will likely follow a similar pattern.
Rumors circulated long before launch that Requiem would receive additional content, with one report suggesting that “at least” one piece of DLC was in development ahead of release. The DLC was soon believed to focus on Alyssa Ashcroft, the mother of Requiem's protagonist, Grace; however, a more recent rumor suggests that we might be getting more Leon content instead. Of course, it can always be both.
Nakanishi's “surprise” teasing likely will be mercenary mode. This mode has been a staple of the series, with the two most recent entries, Village and 4 Remake featuring it, so it seems inevitable that it will come to Requiem. Whatever it is, I'm more than happy to spend some more time in the horrible world of Capcom.
If you're dying for more Resident Evil Requiem content, we've interviewed both Leon and Grace and you can check them out here (Leon) and here (Grace).
