If you're like me, you've recently beaten Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch and the idea of playing in all the major regions ahead Pokemon winds and waves is exciting. There's certainly plenty of time until they release in 2027, but there's no time like the present to be playing Johto remakes. Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver. But before you dive in, it's best to understand the exclusive Legendary Pokemon and how they work, especially Kyogre, Groudon, and Rayquaza.
Interestingly, Ho-Oh and Lugia can both be caught Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver— one as a legendary story, the other as a legendary game ending. Latias and Latios return as roaming legends in the endgame as well, with non-event native appearances. HeartGold and SoulSilverrespectively Meanwhile, Rayquaza can be caught in both games, but beyond that, there's a version-exclusive move to consider when choosing one.
Rayquaza should determine if you're playing HeartGold or SoulSilver (assuming you don't have both)
Namely catching Rayquaza Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver requires someone to have both games, beat both games, and have two pieces of Nintendo DS hardware. Alternatively, a better solution is to pick a friend's opposite game, as Rayquaza requires trading between the two Pokemon games. If someone joins you on this journey, or at least owns one of the two games, then it's best to buy the opposite. If you have a friend with Pokémon HeartGoldplay SoulSilver; if you have a boyfriend Pokemon SoulSilverbuy Pokémon HeartGold. Otherwise you won't get Rayquaza.

Players must be there to catch Rayquaza Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilvergame over. There are quite a few steps, but the first step in the game is the hardest on this path (defeating Red). The first thing to note though is Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver'exclusive legendary Pokemon. Kyogre meets in Pokémon HeartGoldand Groudon meets in Pokemon SoulSilverand players will need both for Rayquaza (hence two systems or a friend required).

Complete the Copycat Girl (Saffron City) quest that requires you to talk to her, get her Clefairy doll from the Vermillion City Pokémon Fan Club and return it to her for the Magnet Train Pass.

You will be able to talk to Steven in Silph. What to get the Hoenn starter which also unlocks the Weather Trio.

Go to the Embedded Tower on Route 47 and complete it, catching either Kyogre or Groudon, depending on your version.

Trade your Kyogre/Groudon with each other. You will need both for a limited time.

Return to the Embedded Tower with Kyogre and Groudon in your party and trigger Rayquaz's spawn
The most important thing to remember is that you and a friend (or you if you want to play both games and have two systems) will need different versions. If you also have a boyfriend Pokémon HeartGoldfor example, then there is no catching Rayquaza.
Reviving the Weather Trio story through trading
Two aspects of this Rayquaza are so interesting. First, this little task is designed to encourage trading Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver (not to mention that the remake swaps out some of the standard version's exclusive Pokemon). This isn't surprising, but it does show how connectivity is often the main theme of the franchise.
Second, through trading, players essentially reshape the story of the Weather Trio Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire and Emeraldwhere Rayquaza must descend to essentially guard his counterparts. Of course, if you play through everyone's remakes Pokemon so games Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire of course to reintroduce this story with a fun twist: Mega Rayquaza, Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre.
