While they wait, these 10 similar anime should keep them entertained just the same. Each anime shares similarities in terms of plot or themes with Sentenced To Be A Hero.
The best must-watch anime for solo leveling fans
Fans of Solo Leveling should check out these other action anime that share similar themes and characters.
Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works
Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works is a story in which legendary warriors from the past are summoned to fight in the Holy Grail War. Each leader character summons a warrior type to assist, defend, and fight alongside them in battle. Although plot-wise, it is significantly different from Sentenced to Be a Hero. The concept of summoned warriors is comparable to Goddesses.
Goddesses, similar to summoned warriors, assist their knights. Often with unique, powerful abilities and skills, they have an overwhelming impact on battle. This is seen as early as Episode 1, when Teoritta, the goddess of swords, summoned a considerable number of swords to Xylo's aid.
That time I was reincarnated as a smile
That Time I Got Reincarnated has become a long-running popular series today. It's about Isekai, where a middle-aged man reincarnates into a new magical world as Slime after being stabbed. After befriending an all-powerful dragon, he sets out on a journey to understand the world and help others.
On the surface, Rimuru's story doesn't seem remotely close to that of Xylo. But as the anime continues, similarities start to emerge. Both anime have religious institutions working in the background for their own benefit. These institutions vilify what appears to be a threat to their power and manipulate various organizations to fulfill their needs.
A cautious hero
The Cautious Hero is a comedic fantasy where the protagonist hardly ever faces any real danger. But on the other hand, Sentenced To Be A Hero has a largely serious tone where people's lives are often in danger. Despite this fundamental difference, the two match up in their leading pairings.
In Sentenced To Be A Hero, Xylo is accompanied by a goddess-like figure named Teoritta. Similarly, in Cautious Hero, Seiya is accompanied by a goddess named Ristarte. Both protagonists are quiet and usually let their actions do the talking. While the goddesses are cheerful and seriously guide their respective heroes. Also, the attitude of the heroes is greatly influenced by their past.
Attack on Titan
Attack on Titan is perhaps one of the most popular anime of the last ten years. With such a diverse plot and cast, it has several elements that make it a great watch for Sentenced To Be A Hero fans. Firstly, the theme of discrimination is present in both anime. In Attack on Titan, the Eldians are looked down upon by the rest of the world. Similarly, heroes like Xylo are instantly looked down upon without further thought.
Just as Marley often views warrior units as mere tools/weapons, the Church also treats goddesses in the same way. They were willing to discard Teoritta if she proved useless to them. Eren and Xylo also share a similar emotion of avenging something or someone.
The executioner and her way of life
Despite their obvious differences in plot, the two anime share a thematic similarity. In The Kat and Her Way of Life, the heroes are summoned from different worlds by the royal family. However, the church sees them as a threat due to the disasters they have caused in the past, so they are executed. Both anime have an aversion to heroes. Also, the appearance of heroes who are a threat is comparable to the appearance of fairies who are a threat to the world.
Re: Zero
Subaru's story begins when he is transported to a fantasy world. A mysterious girl helps him and he ends up helping her in the committee. But when the two are tragically murdered, he returns in time to make things right. Although they have their obvious differences, Xylo and the other heroes have similar abilities.
When they are killed, they do not die. Instead, they are revived and forced to continue the grueling life of a hero. However, this power comes at a cost, as Xylo suggests in Episode 1. Every time he is reborn, he loses a part of himself. Eventually, they lose their sanity and identity.
Akame ga Kill!
Akame ga Kill's Night Raid is an assassination squad rebelling against the ruling party. Despite their righteous intent, they are portrayed as dangerous and evil. Similarly, heroes are individuals who receive a hero's punishment. Although society considers them the worst criminals, in reality they are just individuals who pose a threat to the church.
In order to protect itself, the church pushes these individuals into dangerous situations. Both anime also share tragic character deaths. Initially seen as villains, the protagonists' morality and righteousness lead to a change of heart in the various interacting characters.
86
World of 86 tells a story about discrimination, identity and war. Similar to Sentenced to Be a Hero, the ruling party promotes propaganda at the expense of some of the people. These people are sent to war with little regard for their lives. Both anime also have characters that are closer to the truth and work directly with those discriminated against. In 86 that character is Vladilen Miliza and in Sentenced to Be a Hero it is Patausche Kivia.
Hell's paradise
Infernal Paradise is about Gabimaru who lived a life of crime. His hope for death is put on hold when he is sent on a mission with other criminals to atone for their sins. Compared to Sentenced to Be a Hero, both protagonists are haunted by their past actions. Death seems not to have let them down. There are elements of immortality and the “criminals” are used as tools to achieve a greater goal.
The Rising of the Shield Hero
The Rising of the Shield Hero is the best anime to watch after you finish Sentenced to Be a Hero. Both shows have a main character that the rest of the world sees as a villain. They are trapped in a situation where they are forced to fight for people they despise, but hope to eventually break through this facade and avenge the wrong they have faced. They also have close companions who see them for who they really are and support them. Xylo's protective care and growing care for Teoritta is also comparable to Naofumi's care for Raphtalia.
The best action anime to fill the void since Demon Slayer
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is one of the most popular anime of all time, and fans looking for similar shows should check out this action series.
These anime carry the essence of Sentenced being a hero in one way or another. Through similar characters and premises, they tend to focus on similar themes and relationships. Are there any other shows that remind you of Xylo's ongoing journey?
