Professor Oak's assistant at the entrance to Route 2 is a guaranteed encounter that will stop you when you exit Tin City via the eastern exit after defeating Brock and earning the Boulder Badge.

Only unique types of Pokemon count towards the number of captured Pokemon that Professor Oak's sidekicks count towards their rewards. To know exactly how many of your Pokemon qualify, check the “Owned” section of your Pokedex.

Professor Oak

After players defeat the Elite Four and become champions, Professor Oak himself takes over as the final “Helper”. If your Pokedex has 60 different types of Pokemon Registered at the time your Pokemon is inducted into the Hall of Fame, Professor Oak will reward you with a national Pokedex that allows trainers to enter the actual post-game.

Obtaining the National Dex unlocks the following options in FireRed and LeafGreen:

  • The ability to evolve Gen 1 Pokemon into their Gen 2 variants.

  • Access to the extended Sevii Islands (Islands Four, Five, Six and Seven) via Rainbow Pass.

  • Encounter legendary Pokemon after the game (Mewtwo, Ho-Oh, Lugia, Deoxys, Entei, Suicune and Raikou).
