In the lead-up to the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, there was some overblown hope that Nintendo would finally add some variant of Trophy/Achievement support to its console, allowing users to chart their victories in the same way as the Xbox and PlayStation.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the case, and while Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have some list of completion objectives, the fact remains that there are still no trophies or achievements on Nintendo's console, for better or for worse.
“No,” VP of Gamer Experience and Product Bill Trinen said at the time when asked if the Switch 2 would finally have the feature.
Nintendo has the right to refuse achievements
Switch 2 focuses on real games.
It doesn't matter. RetroAchievements took the hard work off Nintendo's hands and added support for the Wii, Nintendo's seventh-generation console, which is now officially 20 years old.
The end result is a plethora of digital milestones to unlock for some of the best Wii games.
“Wii we are extremely excited to welcome you to our biggest launch ever with over 180 sets! RetroAchievements is proud to announce support for our 53rd console, the Nintendo Wii!” the forum wrote in a post.
It's been two years since the last major launch, which happened to be the GameCube, and now the Wii has support on the popular online platform, with over 180 sets available.
These sets range from Donkey Kong Barrel Blast to Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 to Super Smash Bros. Brawl and yes Mario Kart Wii.
“This makes Mia so happy,” wrote one user in response.
Users are already earning RetroAchievements left and right, and more games will no doubt be added to the list. Being a community-driven platform, this may take some time, but the fact that there are over 180 sets available, including some of the most famous Wii games, is a testament to that community.
The Wii is retro, you know
If the 20-year anniversary isn't enough for you to know, then allow the BBC to inform you that the Wii is a retro console, however hard to stomach.
That makes it ripe for inclusion on a platform like RetroAchievements, though that doesn't stop the pain of knowing we're officially old enough to remember what it was like to get a Wii at Christmas.
If it's any consolation, GameStop recently “stated” that the Wii U, PS3, and Xbox 360 all count as retro consoles for the purposes of its trade-in program. As the PlayStation 4 slowly approaches its 13th birthday, or coming of age, it won't be long before we start hearing nostalgia for Sony's eighth-generation console.
If you'll excuse me, I have to buy a walking stick.
