A Super Smash Bros movie is definitely happening

Major spoilers for Super Mario Galaxy Movie first!

Super Mario Galaxy Movie it surprised me. Of course, I expected to enjoy it a bit – after all, I grew up with Mario and I appreciate the adventures I've had with the gang throughout the Mushroom Kingdom. But as I get older, there's one truth that stares back at me: not every bit Super Mario the content is meant for me. My enjoyment as an adult is often secondary to the younger target audience. That's how I felt about the first movie. It was perfect for a younger audience who were on the verge of falling in love with Mario and his friends, just like I was when I was their age. Super Mario Galaxy Moviehowever, it took me on an adventure I didn't know I needed: one where I was a kid again for just 90 minutes. The nostalgic soundtrack of my childhood filled my ears. The strategic placement of portraits and game elements felt spectacular. And the only thing that could have made it more perfect was if I watched the movie with my dad.

Super Mario Galaxy Movie it was exactly what it should have been. Super Mario was the pinnacle of escape for me. To no one's surprise, the geeky girl in the middle of nowhere often sought refuge in pixelated screens and the stories of friendship and belonging that came with them. This film uses the same energy with a confidence that the first film didn't quite have. He knows the audience is there for the spectacle, the references and the rush of appreciation when something familiar appears on screen. And that's where things started to feel different, like Super Mario Galaxy Movie it felt like a trial run for something unexpected.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Feels Like a Smash Bros. Audition Tape

I'll just say it: this movie has a lot more action than is absolutely necessary. I don't necessarily mean that as a compliment, although I did enjoy the event. The sets were bigger, the stakes were higher, and the fight choreography was pulled straight from something similar Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Princess Peach also got in on the action. I swore I saw her make moves that looked suspiciously close to her Break moveset, and once it clicked, I couldn't undo it. Super Mario Galaxy Movie tended towards a larger language which Break fans understand instinctively.

Star Fox Showing Up was an “Oh, we're doing this” moment.

Fox in Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Anyone who even casually followed the marketing knew that Fox McCloud had appeared. However, actually seeing it integrated into the film still felt surreal. Voiced by Glen Powell, Fox could easily feel like a gimmick or distraction. Instead, he slipped into the film with surprising ease. His presence doesn't overstay its welcome, and while his dynamic with Mario and the rest of the cast could have used more time to breathe, it worked enough to make one thing abundantly clear: the door is open. And once that door opens, things start to look a little fishy.

Cameos started to feel like a roll call

At one point I stopped trying to guess if another character would appear and started wondering who it would be. Seeing characters pop up like ROB and Mr. Game & Watch wasn't just a service for fans; it was a deliberate nod to the shared universe. For anyone who hasn't played yet Breakthese could only be read as quirky, flashing accessories. But for the people in the audience who have? Every look landed. At my local theater, the audience roared at every revelation. In modern times, that's the kind of audience response you don't get unless you come across something bigger than the film itself.

The credits scene…

As a seasoned watcher of post-credit scenes, I knew not to get up until the last second. When I saw the reveal I was hoping to see, a few things came to mind:

  • “Princess Daisy joins the cast!”

  • “She's so beautiful! They kept her darker skin tone from before.” Mario Party 4!

  • “Luigi finally gets his mate!”

  • “Oh, we sure get a Break movie now!”

As a girl who wanted to grow up to be Princess Daisy (don't ask me how that goes), it's pretty exciting to see her join the cast. Her appearance was the kind of tease you'd expect from a franchise that knows it has momentum and is confident in its performance. But this also reinforces the formula: expand the list, build momentum, and keep adding pieces to the board. Is this sequel bait? Yes.

Masterhand, we have a problem with Smash Bros

There is an elephant in the room that cannot be ignored. What about the rights to all the characters you'll have to download Break film? Here is the plot area right now:

  • Mario lives under Universal and Illumination.

  • Live action The Legend of Zelda The film is being worked on with Sony.

  • There are also non-Nintendo characters that present a double whammy of trouble. But when it comes to strict film rights:

    • Sonic ended up at Paramount.

    • minecraft's Steve is with Warner Bros.

Fully realized on paper Super Smash Bros. a film that pulls from all these worlds sounds like a licensing nightmare. Which means that if it does happen, it will probably start smaller. Nintendo-centric characters might be a smarter move to build the foundation anyway.

I didn't expect a Mario Galaxy movie to work, which is why I think a Smash Bros. movie might.

I didn't go into this movie expecting to like it as much as I did. I knew I would enjoy it just because it was Mario product, but I didn't expect to become a huge advocate for people seeing this movie. This movie proves that Nintendo adaptations understand the brief: the plots can be basic, the flair can be in the visuals, and there's no need to reinvent any wheels. They just need to feel like love letters and Super Mario Galaxy Movie is definitely a love letter.

So yeah, I don't know exactly how Super Smash Bros. a movie would work. Without any context, it sounds stuffy, capitalistic, and maybe even ridiculous. But I also didn't think this movie would hit the way it did. If the warm-up looks like this, then it's for a Super Smash Bros. Movie to happen next time. I just hope to see it with dad.
