Several creators are reporting that Nintendo has removed some of their levels Super Mario Maker 2on the grounds that they included “advertising content”. Super Mario Maker 2 was released on the Nintendo Switch in 2019 and allows players to create and design their own levels using power-ups, enemies and elements from different titles.
It's been a few years since the game's release, and Nintendo has largely moved on. Super Mario Maker 2 has received occasional updates on the Nintendo Switch in recent years, but it's been a while since players have seen any new content. The game was mainly kept alive by the community of players, including those who built some of its more challenging levels and experiences.
Forgotten Super Mario just got a new update and a new event
The often forgotten Super Mario game is launching a brand new event and update, giving players an excuse to come back or play it for the first time.
Why Nintendo is removing Super Mario Maker 2 levels
Content creators like DGR and PangaeaPanga claimed “thousands”. Super Mario Maker 2 levels are deleted by Nintendo. The reason for the removal appears to be the game's use of hashtags, many of which promote a Discord server called Team Shell. Creators who use related hashtags to help people find those specific levels are now being removed, as Nintendo apparently considers this to be “promotional content.” Nintendo is usually careful about restricting online content, but Super Mario Maker the community does not believe it occurred naturally.
Current theory between Super Mario Maker 2 fans is that the levels are mass reported by the only bad actor in the game's community. This has not been verified, but it would better explain why these levels are suddenly deleted after all these years. There has been a lot of frustration on social media, as the community is the reason why the Switch game is still seeing interest among newcomers, even with little official support. Super Mario Maker 2 surpassed more than 26 million courses uploaded in 2021 and is likely to have grown significantly since then.
Although this situation boils down to one bad actor, it seems Super Mario Maker 2 players have few options. Nintendo's methods can be used as a weapon against players and the whole thing is unfortunate for fans. The game may not have much official support anymore, but passionate Super Mario Maker 2 players continue to spend countless hours playing the game. On YouTube, DGR recommends that players who are concerned about their own content being removed want to copy their levels without using hashtags. This way the levels can be preserved if they are picked up in another message.

Super Mario Maker 2 is one of several games that fans were hoping would see an update to the Nintendo Switch 2. Over the past year, several games released on the original Switch have seen improved visuals and performance, in addition to new content. Super Mario Maker 2 seems like a perfect candidate, especially if Nintendo would add Joy-Con mouse support. Of course, many fans would be much happier with the third installment in the series, which offers even more options for creating your own Mario courses. For now, fans will have to rely on the tools available to play the myriad of levels that have been uploaded by the community.
