Pokemon fan shares Avian Diglett and Dugtrio

Fruitful Pokemon fan Matratzfratz shared his idea of ​​what Avian Diglett and its evolution, Dugtrio, could look like. As the name suggests, the Avian Diglett is of the flying type and has shifted from its normal appearance to one that looks like a nest containing a single egg. Sharing a fun Pokemon Pokedex entry, the artist noted that Diglett sometimes just pops up at Pokemon nurseries or when he's near Buneara, a nod to Pokemon eggs and Easter egg hunting traditions. However, things get especially interesting with its evolution, Dugtrio, which has a design twist based on real zoology.

Avian Dugtrio, which is written with a question mark due to the presence of four creatures, looks like the Diglett trio with an oversized Ditto-like egg behind them. While Ditto is popular right now because of Pokemon Pokopiathis particular Ditto has a sinister reason for being there. The design is based on real parasites, such as the cuckoo, which leave their own eggs in the nests of other species of birds to raise. It's not an entirely peaceful existence, however, as the parasites expel the young that actually belong in the host nest. With that in mind, the anxious expression on one of the Digletts making up the evolution makes sense, with the “mysterious fourth sibling” apparently viewing all of his “siblings” as eggs to crack.

Although the artist did not illustrate any other forms for this creature, they did share some other ideas. The Mega Evolution of this particular Pokémon would be the fourth odd sibling by itself, except that it would now be “well-fed”, meaning that it had eaten all the food that was meant for its siblings, or maybe even eaten them itself. Pokemon Fans seem to be delighted with the creativity of the design and the thought that went into it, even though it is based on a morbid real-world phenomenon.

While turning Diglett into an egg fits well with the Pokemon's design, the original series went in a different direction when creatively redesigning the Pokemon and its evolution tree. The regional form, Alolan Dugtrio, gains long blonde hair and is inspired by the volcanic activity common to the region. Meanwhile, Wiglett and Wugtrio, the convergent species, look extremely similar to Diglett and Dugtrio, but are based on creatures like garden eels. It would be interesting to see what other real world species could be combined with Diglett and Dugtrio to create more regional variants and convergent species.
